  • Has Anybody Every Groomed a Cavachon?

Hello - I had never heard of this breed until someone called to make an appointment for her two little girls. She said that hers have the Bichon type of coat and usually gets puppy cuts due to their being prone to matting. She said that she bathes and brushes them on a regular basis. I can visualize what I will probably do, but wanted to know if anyone else had groomed one of these? I researched them on the internet and they definitely are adorable and sweet tempered.
Thanks in advance for any input from the PROS!

They are usually VERY good for grooming. I have several I do on a regular basis and they are all VERY sweet, calm and still for the grooming.
I have one that gets a #4 all over with a short teddy bear head but I dont like the look of the 4 on her coat. It's very wavy but thats what her mom wants. The rest either get an A guard all over or a 1 guard with fuller legs and a teddy bear head with long ears. The ones I do have good hair too and it isnt hard to demat if they have any matting.

You'll likely appreciate the breed after grooming one. I always say it's the best "designer" dog they ever came up with when compared to most of the doodles I get in that are matted hyper messes with bad hair.

i do two at the salon im at.....they come in twice a month though and came from another groomer. they dont go any longer than a 3 3/4 blade and one has a plushish coat whereas the other has a more cowlicky type coat....so it would depend if it has more bichon type hair or more cav. type hair....

It's a mix, not a breed... I imagine they *would* mat pretty easily! I would do whatever looks cute on them and is easy for the owner to manage (short TB face, trimmed ears, etc.).

I have groomed one cavachon....it was adorable. Looked like a fuzzy cavalier to me. The owner wanted kept shorter so I did a #4fc on the body and I think a #1 comb on the legs. She was a sweet puppy. I moves out of state so only got to groom her a few times.....

Yes I have and actually they are one of my favorite "designer" breeds. The ones I have groomed are sweet and cute. They look really cute in a little guard comb with scissored legs. They like most fluffy designers mat if you sneeze on them though.

Thank you fellow groomers. I am looking forward to the grooms tomorrow. I have several Doodles and I am starting to see a pattern of the parents letting them get very matted - I think that they do not know what they are getting into when getting one. Once the adult fur starts to come in, it seems that the mats get bad if not attended to regularly. Last week I spent 4 plus hours trying to save the coat of one. The mats were not deep, close to the skin, but lots of knots and tangles that had to come out prior to clipping down to 3/4". Whew, I think that it was one of the most stressful grooms yet as the dog would not sit very still either. I know that I definitely need to charge more for these!

It's not a breed; there is no standard. Dealing with mixes, you can have a whole range of looks, fur-types, and personalities.
I have done several of these particular mixes. A lot of them have the softer hair, but I have done some with some rough hair. What can I compare it to? Idk, it's just really coarse hair. One of the ones I do with the coarse hair gets a 7 strip, 7 reverse muzzle, and clean feet lol! Oh yeah, and a 1comb tail, and 7 ears. Weird lol.

But all the others want a regular "pet" groom, just like you would a Shih Tzu type thing

I've had 2. Still do one. The girl has more wavy bichonish hair. Easy to brush mats out but owner only brings in every 3-4 months is always a #7 TBH.

Another I used to do had more cavalier hair and got a #4.

                  Both were excellent for grooming.

I had 3 today (same family and come in every 3 weeks) and all 3 look different! One is straight coated with very little hair on her face, one is wavy and one has tight curls. I leave all 3 about an inch long and the 2 with fuzzy faces get regular tbh's, and the other I just tidy the few hairs on her face. Very sweet girls!

I do two of them they come every other month from Seattle for me to groom. They are really great kids to groom. Both of mine have curly coats and get tb heads with SO #A on body scissor legs.

Yes. Just make it look cute depending on type of coat and what the owner is willing to maintain between groomings.

The coat could be curlier or just wavy. Coarse or silky. Most likely it will be plush. A short clipper cut like 4f might look really nice, like velvet. Maybe a teddy bear head. You'll have to judge what will look good once you see it.

I groom one every three weeks. The owner likes his body in a 1/2" (Tan)comb. I use the A (lavender) comb on legs and then lightly scissor. A comb on head and sides of face, reverse #1 (tan) on chin then blend with sides. This is per their wishes. The key is thoroughly drying coat. This cut leaves him nice and fluffy but manageable.

I groom one, and he is my favorite dog of all my clients. I'm absolutely in love. His hair is coarser like a CKC, and wavy. He doesn't get anything fancy, just a 7 strip (owners say he likes it better being short, and claim he gets excited when told he's going to see me), with a 2 wahl comb (blue) on his head, short round muzzle, and I leave his tail fluffy. I would love to leave him longer but he's cute no matter what. When I first started grooming him, he had awful eye infections that were seen by a few vets before they got it handled. Now he's just lovely, handsome, sweet, and docile. If I were a bad person I'd steal him and hightail it out of the whole state I like to groom him at the end of my day so we can have cuddle time while waiting for pickup.
