  • ? about pattern on back of schnauzer leg

I was taught that the pattern on the back of the leg should be brought down to about 2 finger widths from the hock. I was just looking at the Westminster winning mini schnauzer and the lowest part of the pattern on the back leg is about 2 finger widths down (maybe 3) from the point of rump.

Has it changed, or have I aleays been doing it wrong? I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but just checking.

They do set it higher than what most of us do for pet trims.

There is no hard fast rule for show grooming since each show dog is built differently, and the person who grooms it alters the pattern to enhance the dog's conformation, or help hide faults.

For example, if the dog you saw was lacking substance or muscling in the rear, the handler may raise the pattern to give the illusion of more muscle or bone. The hair will bulk out weak areas. The pattern may also be moved to hide or accentuate weak or overdone rear angulation.

I think the two finger rule was just to make it easier to groom them for most newbies. I find tha tif I show the muscle, and blend into the leg, I get the right point.

I took pics of where Lisa set Pierre's lines. I will post them. My hubby asked me why on earth I was taking a pic of the dog's butt, lol.

everydog is going to be different, nothing in black and white. If I had to measure I would probably have to say about 3 fingers from the top of the hock. If you were to take it all the down to the top it would be hard for the rear angualtion. Some schnauzers are straight in the rear and to create angualtion you have to leave it to the bend in the leg
