Any suggestions???

My sixteen year old daughter has been getting hives off and on for about 3 weeks now. One day she was so bad I had to take her to the ER because her whole face swelled and her throat was swelling. Anyway they aren't sure where the hives are coming from and keep telling me to give her Benadryl when she breaks out. She broke out again on Friday so was taking Benadryl every six hours. She took it yesterday at 8 am and I told her not to take her next dose because I wanted to see if they came back. Anyway around 2:30 in the afternoon she was walking through the kitchen and just fell over like a ton of bricks and landed on her back in the middle of the kitchen floor. I'm assuming she passed out because she doesn't remember falling, only walking to the fridge. I spent 6 hours at the ER yesterday and they did blood work and a cardiogram and said everything checked out so not to worry about it. She has seemed fine since but I am still really worried. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this??? Thanks

You need to get her to an allergist and have her tested. Allergies can come and go over years. It could be something that she has always been around that all of a sudden she is allergic to. A few years ago my husband came home from work one day broken out in hives. He took some Benadryl and went to bed. The next day he went to help his dad with some yard work, when he came home the hives were even worse. He went to the emergency doctor and got more Benedryl and some steriods. The next day he did some yard work at home, that night I kept waking up to make sure he was still breathing the hives were so bad he even had them on the palms of his hands and the soles of his feet. On Monday he went to the allergist for tests, when they did the test for grass it reacted immediatly and covered all of the other tests that they had done. Now we can't even cut the grass when he is home. He had always done all of the yard work from when he was a teenager and had never had any problems at all until he was in his 40's. He is also allergic to dogs, cats and horses. We just let him suffer with that.

Yeah, she's going back to see her doctor next week and I will ask for a referral to the allergist. She's been okay since Sat.. Thanks for the reply.

Definately get her in to see an allergist. My daughter had an anaphylactic reaction when she was 11 and we had no idea she had a life threatening allergy until the bad reaction happened. After allergy tests we discovered what her allergies were and she has an epi-pen and we can avoid another close call. Good Luck.

Also check blood pressure. No really anything to do with the hives. Does she feel lightheaded often, or maybe the Benadryl lowers her pressure. Since about her age, I have had low blood pressure and feel faint on occasion.

I hope that your daughter is doing better! I wonder if the benadryl had something to do with her fainting? I hope that you are able to discover what is causing the hives soon. Wish her a healthy recovery.

K9 I hope your daughter feels better! Keep us updated. That benadryl is some strong stuff. My son is hyper so when they tell me to give it to him...he teeters on acting normal.

I'm with the allergist on that one to. When I was 15 I had a severe allergic reaction and ended up falling down the stairs. I had to get a shot of epi and then my mom took me straight to the allergist. Found out I was allergic to dogs (doesn't stop me). It's just a mild allergy and I take Allegra D for it now. Just be careful because what seems like small reactions is actually small ones leading up to a big one. When you have allergies, it doesn't just come out with the small episodes. It actually builds up in the system until one day it finally explodes in a serious episode. Or at least that's what the allergist told me. I had to walk around with an epi-pen for a year after my reaction because my throat closed up on me. Had another reaction when I was 20, that one landed me in the hospital for 3 days. So now I'm on medicine...
