  • Hello, somewhat new...

I have posted on the old broad before, but haven't really introduced myself before.

I am a wannabe Groomer. I have 3 dogs. A burly girl black Lab., a wimpy boy Border Collie Mix rescued from the pound and a Sassy Shih Tzu(girl) also a rescue.

I was raised by big dogs and always thought that was the only way to go, but a couple of years ago I started wanting a smaller dog that I could take more places with me. I went to the pound and made friends with the receptionist and she called me when a small dog came in. She turned out to be a Shih Tzu and I could be more in love with my sassy old girl. She was in such bad shape and they guessed about 8-10 years old. I thought who it going to adopt her and would they give her a good final home. Well we are going on three years and she have changed my life.

With big wash and wear dogs it was easy keeping them neat. With my little Sassy girl I have discovered a passion for grooming!! I love cutting her hair and keeping her looking cute.

The next step is to make my second career goals a reality and become a Professional Pet Stylist. That is my story in a nutshell and why I LOVE this Board.

I bought both books by Melissa Verplank and I am trying to decide how to proceed from there. I want to be a mobile groomer.

I have started to buy little things for my tool kit and have thought about taking a home study class like JKL and working as a bather for a certified groomer or one with great experience.

Another Shih Tzu Fan Yeah!!!! Go for your passion, You sound like I was. I played and primped my Shih Tzus until they would run whenever they saw a brush or comb. Since I was already breeding I decided to expand on that and start learning how to groom. I quit my corporate job, took out a loan and 1 year and 4 months later I love grooming just as much as the first day I stepped into school. Good Luck and Welcome to a great place

HiYa Sassy Shih Tzu! No doubt you will find lots of resources here as well as great advice! You can definitely benefit from taking an online course, especially if you're a beginner. Even better, is if you can find a good Groomer to train you. Hands on learning was so much less scarey for me, when I actually went to work as a Groomer. Whatever doors open up for you in either category is a good place to start. Good luck!!

Hands on is the way to go. I still sometimes can't figure things out unless someone shows me.

Whooo- who another Tzu head!! I too wanted to go to grooming school for about 5 years just couldn't afford it, not the "right" time you all know life was gettin' in the way...Some how along the way, Now I was in the Restaurant Biz for 20+ years , I met a master groomer, that used to be an instructor, but had had it with teaching. I would help her out at her shop at first just maybe 2 hours or so, doing odd job things. We got to be friendly then one day she said to me you do so well with the dogs would you like to learn to groom , have you ever been interested, I think you would do real well. Well it is a bit over a year later and I am happy and broke but so much , more happy! With time the clients will come and things will get better Of this I am sure. Just keep the dream, everything else will follow!!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I could just cry, it is so nice to be so welcomed.

I am always scared to post on boards, but this board and all the members are so nice and supportive that I decided to quit being shy and just let you all know a little about me.

Thank you again for the words of encouragement and the big welcome.

You won't make an enemy here. I would never have guessed I would love them so much, until I adopted my old lady from the pound.
