  • Now that felt good!

Got a call from a pomeranian owner who's dog I last groomed at the vet clinic in March of 2006. When she told me her name and that I had groomed the dog before I checked the notes on my handy dandy PDA and saw that the dog had been badly matted and I had to take it down to a 5F and 7F in some places, but the dog had been fairly good for the whole process. I explained to the owner that I no longer did once a year jobs, but I'd be happy to put her on my mobile schedule if she was willing to get on a 6-8 week schedule with her Pom.

She asked how much it'd be, I quoted her a two prices -- a higher one to get the dog back in shape and what her regular groom price would be after that. I told her my first available appointment in her area would be June 13th, that I also had some openings on June 14th, but after those dates nothing was available until the end of July/early August.

She told me she'd have to think about committing to the regular schedule and would possibly call me back. I told her that there was another groomer at the vet clinic now who I was quite comfortable recommending if she was just interested in getting her dog back in shape, but that it would be much better for her dog to get her on a regular schedule whichever groomer she wanted to use.

I felt really good when I got off the phone with her; I remembered how when I first started I would take anything and everything and it's so nice to be in a position now where I don't have to groom everything that comes my way. I can be choosy and base my business on maintenance grooming and prebooked appointments.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE being a mobile groomer! I love working for myself and making my own decisions. About to enjoy a four-day weekend in NYC with my hard working hubby (in addition to his regular full time job he is also my mechanic!).

    Anyway, just wanted to share.

I can't wait to be in that position. I still take anything and everything.

Mobile is awesome. I don't know why more groomers aren't mobile.

What a great feeling that must be.
One day I may do the same thing. I'm about there but not quite. I still take those OAY dogs, someone has to do them, but I don't get too many.

Meesh, you're preaching to the choir, girl, LOL!!

I recently had a call for a shep/huskie cross needing a "puppy cut" -- who's owner wants to stay because the dog gets diahrea when nervous....

I'm no longer doing large dogs, oay dogs or even new dogs. Booked for the year. It took a few years of hard work to get here, but I'm grateful every day.

I am so jealous, but I am very happy for you. I hope to be there one day myself. I just started mobile in December and so I still take anything that I can get within reason.

                  Inspired!

My intent wasn't to brag or make people jealous -- well, maybe a little ;-) but to INSPIRE you all! It will come to you faster than you think. And I am very grateful that I am in this position now.

And yeah, what is it with Huskies and how worked up they get? And the SINGING!! My goodness do they sing when you blow them dry! They look like fearsome worlves for crying out loud and they are the biggest babies going. I am keeping my Huskies and German Shepherds for now, but am not accepting any more -- they are such hard work to clean up the van after and I am typically soaked to the skin when I finish bathing them cuz they shake off so much. I wouldn't know how to tell my current clients that I'm dropping their dogs, pretty good dogs and clients, but I quote such high prices for new Huskies and GSDs that no one new is booking theirs with me -- which is what I was after.

And Cockers are another wonder breed for pooping and peeing on the table. Along with Cockapoos and Cockawhatevers.

Meesh (enjoying a long weekend for a change)

I was in that position for a while, but now I have someone bathing for me so I'm not quite as booked out as I used to be, so we're having to start building up again. It is a wonderful feeling, however, to be able to turn anything down.

Mid August will be exactly three years mobile. I was booked as full as I was capable of within a few months (I went straight from from grooming school). In August '05, one year in, an article about me ran in a local paper and I have been at or over capacity ever since.

                            What an Inspiration!!

Thanks for your post, Meesh! I'm also going mobile (as soon as my trailer's done! Grrrr!) straight outta school. That's so great to know that you've done it too and are so booked up. I work one day a week in a shop until I build up clientel and to get more experience before I'm out on my own.
How was your speed and quality of each groom since you went out there right after school? My biggest concern is to do a great job in a reasonable amount of time. (Yikes!) I love reading positive posts!! Keep 'em coming!
