  • Reaction to people's hormones

I did this four year old femal beagle's nails about 4 months ago and she just sat there all still and was happy as can be but after I get two nails done today she starts getting snappy, growling and showing teeth.

I was wondering if it was maybe cause it was time for my monthly visitor and my hormones sent some signal she didnt' like or if she was just having a bad day

Yes, dogs do. I find I am calmer when not around that time of month & so are the dogs.

I remember when my sister came over one time & she was 7months pg. My JRT smelled her so much I had to put him away. I didn't think too much about it till I got pg. My JRT treated me different, hard to explain but when I started having problems around the 7mo mark he started acting really nervous. Then the night before I went into labor my JRT was racing from one room to the other freaking out. We lived in a condo so we just thought it was a noise outside. He would come to me, smell me & run to another room to hide tail tucked. The next day 8mo along & my water broke. Daughter born in just 2hrs.

There are stories of dogs smelling people & finding cancer etc. So yes dogs can tell when things change etc.

It might not have been the hormones though. I have dogs that will let you clip a few nails then get grumpy about it.

Yes dogs do react to the hormone changes in us, she may have felt that you were a female in 'heat" , so make a note of what dogs react around that time and it will usualy be females that are snippy, males get very friendly! Another plus for the change. lol

I know from the past week and grooming dogs that the ex normally groomed, they were much calmer with me than they were with him.
It's amazing at what dogs can pick up on...

I would think so, my parents have a beagle and I have a JRT sunshine.sunshine has had skin issues forever and he(CHEWY THE BEAGLE) smells her all the time .my parents keep saying he is looking for love b ut I keep seeing how he is sniffing at the base of her tail on her back where she gets hot spots even when she doent have a hot spot.I think he know something is wrong with her skin.becouse he will try to lick her back in that spot. she will bite him though.

I havent experienced it with dogs, but I can tell you that with big cats, they DEFINITELY know when a woman is riding the cotton pony. We weren't allowed to work them during that time.

LMAO @ "the cotton pony" boy you come up with some good ones.

She did get a good wiff of my goodies when I bent down to pet her so could be what it was.

it's funny you are asking this today! because i was thinking about it as i was grooming today, all the 4 dogs that i did today gave me a hard time for everything! i was getting very upset then i remembered that i should be getting my monthly visit soon i get in a very bad mood around 3 to 5 five days before i get it. so back to your question i think they sense how we are in a bad mood more than anything so they act scared or nervous and that's why they act up! by the way the dogs that i groomed today get groomed very often 2 every 2 weeks and the other 2 every 4 weeks and they are good most of the time! i guess the other times it's my fault because I'M PMSing

Now it all makes sense. I groomed a dog on Monday that I never have much trouble with. This time she wouldn't let me touch her nails. I was shocked. Trying to figure out what I did different this time. Must have been the hormones....it is that time of the month after all! Whew!

i dont know if any other groomers notice this.... but it is a full moon today (sat the 30th) and in the shop i work in... a couple days before the full moon and during the full moon dogs and their humans act different! every time we have a bad week with dogs that are usually well behaved we notice its going to be a full moon! just a thot!

                      My idea on this

I think that I experience some crazy hormone changes and it affects me very much like my ability to stay calm and focused. I get bad headaches, and also feel a little bit panicky. I know for sure that dogs are definately reacting to me because I notice at those times grooming the difficult dogs is much worse than usual. I think they feel my emotional changes that come along with it and they don't want to cooperate with an unstable pack member.

But any client of mine who has had children after their dogs I have asked how their dogs have been acting during their pregnancy and they always mention how the dog is different.

Dang,,,here I thought I had dog skills,,, not the fact that I haven't had any girl parts in over 7 years,,,,even when I was a newbie in school, the same dogs that would try & kill the other students would behave for me. They were for the most part all very young, 18-25 yrs old. Then there was me, old lady in her early 50's. They kept asking me how I did it, my reply was " I don't know",,, Very interesting,,,,

Nun and Crystal right there with ya. I get down right crazy that time of the month I'm always in pain and on edge so it's hard to find that "grooming zen" so it's probably a good combo of the two. I know I had to be careful around stallions that time of the month too, they were always extra naughty and got real nippy, speaking of ponies.

I don't care what they say either, that "wolf moon" night was the stupidest day we've had in a long time. For me,my boss and apparently a lot of our clients. but that's a whole new post!

                              hormones

I believe it is true that animals change as our hormones do. Not just dogs. My cat is quite the healer, whenever my S/O has breathing problems which is often these days as he has emphasema she lays on his chest at night when he is asleep until his breathing gets better. She also seems to know when I am really down for that is when she pays most attention to me. The other day I had cramps so bad I was almost in the fetal postion, she came and layed on my stomache right where my cramping was and within five minutes my cramps were gone. Animals are amazing.
