  • I saved the dog but

    couldn't save myself.

I was at my second client's house today to do her 5lb Yorkie. I had the dog in my right hand and a tin of cookies in my left. My client and I both were walking out of her house thru the door to the garage. I stepped down off the step and went down hard. Apparently the kids had left their boots at the bottom in the walkway and I stepped on one of them. I proably would have been all right if I didn't come down on the ice chest sitting right at the side of the door. The corner of the chest hit me in my left side right under my little boobie. Oh God the pain. The whole time I didn't let go of the dog. Thank God I went to my left, had I fell to the right I would have killed the dog landing on her.

My client wanted to take me to the hospital, but being old and stubborn I said I would just go home. Not easy driving this rig in pain. On the way I stopped at the ER because the more I felt the pain, I felt sure I had cracked a rib. That was another adventure. The first thing I did at the ER was get my bra off in the bathroom, it felt like I was being strangled.

I have a huge lump and severe bruising on the boob and rib cage. Xrays didn't show any rib cracks, but the doctor was more concerned about my spleen being damaged. As it turned out I was in the ER 7 hours. So another day lost. Would have lost the day anyway, but would have rather been home feeling sorry for myself then being brave in the ER.

This is the first time in 40 years of grooming that I haven't worked my self to death grooming at Christmas. No grooming, just a bunch of shoveling snow for 3 days, and spending my time in the ER.

The Doc sure was nice and cute, gave me some good drugs to take with orders not to do any lifting for awhile. No problem, can hardly breathe, let alone lift.

Glad you didn't break anything! I fell on my arse in front of a client the other day, how embarrasing.

Glad nothing is broken but it sounds like you will be in pain for awhile. Hope you heal fast.

glad you didn't break anything. a week and a half ago, I had to go check on a client's two dogs while they went to the city. I didn't realize that the concrete steps at my apartment complex had already started to freeze up so quick, and bounced my butt down six cement steps. Even with ample cushioning, I managed to break my coccys (bottom of spine). Missed checking on the dogs, and grooming another dog. First trip in an ambulance, strapped to backboard. Not fun and I didn't see any cute docs, though the paramedic who slipped on the same stairs was cute. Doing the missed dog tommorow. Guess the moral of the story for me is not to be a bumble ball before christmas

Wow, you were lucky that you did not break a bone in that fall-it sounds like a nasty one.
You are going to be REALLY sore tomorrow, so just plan on taking it easy for the next few days...I took a nasty fall a few years ago, cracked and dislocated a shoulder. It hurt plenty bad when it happened, but the next day was really bad, keep your pain meds close by...

Take care and try to enjoy your holiday.

Ouchy! You poor baby! That's what I would do as a reflex. Protect the dog and kill myself. I hope you feel better. Luckily, you didn't break anything. You're better off falling on a booby then your face. Now take it easy, put your feet up and heal.

"Reflex". Ain't it the truth? Had the same thing happen a couple winters ago, slipped on the icy steps while carrying a decrepit 20-year old shih. I went down, HARD, right on my bone head and shoulders, all the while with the dog clutched protectively to my stomach like I was a pill bug holding a piece of gravel. She was totally unfazed (Ooo, a ride! Can we do it agin?). I was sore for at least a week...

Then last week I did a really bad Kristi Yamaguchi impression down my customers front walk with their chi in my arms, I didnt fall but all the gyrating must've been impressive, cuz my customer remarked, "You should get the bronze for that one." Wiseass.

Saved the dog, but, clobbered yourself. That sounds like a groomer. I hope they had homeowner's insurance.

I always thought that if I slipped and fell carrying one of my kids I would instinctively protect them. The one time it happened I actually threw my daughter up in the air! Luckily she didn't get hurt but I felt so badly that I didn't hang on to her. I fell with an old cocker once and fell on my knees and the impact of hitting I dropped him. I wasn't far off the ground by then but I felt terrible. Looks like you have better instincts than I do! I never thought I was a "save myself first" kind of gal LOL
                      Hope you're feeling better soon!

i have also fallen but with a one- eyed cocker i held on to that dog tight as i went backwards hitting my head first on the wall behind me then on the floor. When i was laying there on the floor i let go of the dog for him to be de squeezed and roam around the shop for a sec while i get myself together to get back up lol. Dog was good me i was okay after about an hour nothing serious just hurt like heck!

Wow! I am so glad to hear that you are ok, and nothing broken. I am so scared that I am going to trip and drop a client's dog. I would've ended up in the same predicament! Take care of yourself and rest up over the holidays. And yay for cute doctors!!!
