  • generator hours?

If I'm looking to buy a van (only a couple of years old) with a generator approaching 1700hours, should I be concerned of it crapping out on me? Should I consider plugging more if I buy it? Supposedly, the oil and stuff was done regularly by the owner.

Several people also mentioned bringing a mechanic to see the vehicle, but it's out of state. I wouldn't bring it back unless I were buying it. What should I do then?

    Is It Onan Commercial 6500?

My Commercial generator will last for 5,000 hrs or a little less or more. that is what Onan specialist claim. If they took care of it,ask for proof with receipts. Care makes a difference. You still have a lot of hours. A new Gen. cost 5,000 or more so that is 1,000 per 1,000 hrs.Two yrs ago in april I had a 2,000 dollar short block put in after two decarbs. Now I have maybe two more years of use then I wll sell it or decide. It will be time to hang up my clippers by then.Be sure to decarb now and then...they will know when. Change spark plugs. I was lax in the past few years. The short block is the heart of the generator minus valves...I think. Most expensive part of motor. Onan Mech. can do it. Older Gens were made better, as in most things these days.Buying out of state can be risky...it is too expensive to sue if you get taken. I was lucky Gary in Cal made my first conversion. Actually ripped out one from Ga. new (lost aalllll that money) had Gary redo and used deep cycle batteries. Inverter. Ther best part was he was near for repairs and adjustments.Ber Sure-Be Careful before you hand over the money. Get promises in writing.

I would find a reputable mechanic in that state to check it over. That is not a tone of hours on a gene, but I would also ask for proof of the maint.

My gen has 3,060 hours on it and has been dependable and well maintained. I keep all records of my maintenance and you should insist on seeing theirs. Also for the van's maintainance records. You should line up a local mechanic to give the vehicle a once-over before you purchase it. It would be money very well s[ent.

i replaced my onan5500 at 6000 hours only because i wanted the 7000 and needed overhaul work anyway on the van. 1700 is nothing if well kept up

I'm at 2000 hours on my Onan 7000, and it's running great...I keep up on the maintenance and all is well....I too, have kept all my records and would demand the same from the seller....

I'm currently at 5200 hours now. I've owned my van for 6 months now, I did have a scheduled maintenance and I've been doing my own oil changes and checking the oil periodically on my onw. So far so good.

My Onan 7000 has just under 5000 hours now and is running great. I have always serviced it on or before suggested service intervals.

So if the owner does his/her own maintenance, how do I ask for records?

I keep accurate records of all the oil changes and maintenance I do....There is a service record sheet in the back of the Onan owners manual, I made copies of the master, so I can keep record of everything done to the generator...Whether the work is done by a shop or owner, they should still have records of it....
