I am not sure about this question. I don't have propane so I wouldn't know first hand. But I haven't ever heard anyone here say they needed a permit to carry propane in the van. I do know that you may have a hard time getting someone to fill the propane tank directly in the van. You may have to take the tank out, have them fill it, and put it back in. But I honestly don't know, maybe some here in NJ will answer that has propane in their van. You'll want to locate a propane place that would be willing to fill the tank directly in the van...someone reliable that wouldn't bug out over filling a tank like that. I hope someone here can help you.

make sure before they fill your tanks for the first time they purge them or you won't get much of a fill. They did not purge my tanks properly, and I ran out of propane. Went to get them filled. (2) 20 gal tanks and between the two got 4 gall in. I was like WHAT!! I won't be going to that place to get my tanks filled again. I will go elsewhere. If your dog is fat, you are not getting enough exercise!
