I also work one day at my vet clinic job. I now live an hour away and am trying to start my grooming from the house. I live in a very rural area now and just put a sign out front and in about 3 weeks have had about 10 calls. I have to little girls so I really want to make the home grooming thing work.

I work at my petsomething job, but i would really like to have my own salon or mobile business. I love the benefits I have at petsomething, especially being a single mom. I consider it the next best thing to having my own shop, b/c I am the manager and they let me run things my way and support my decisions 100%. But I have heard not all petsomethings are like this!!
I do have a lot of clients that request me and would follow me in a heartbeat. I also have some clients request that I come to their house to groom for them.

I have a home shop. Love it. 6yrs this April. I live in a very rural area also but I work 5 days a week, no evenings. I do work Sat. I have a part time gal working for me who baths and cleans and answers the phone. I have 2 kids and I have a seperate play area in my shop for the kids that is in view from my grooming table. When my husband built this for me yrs ago he thought I would be busy maybe 1-2 days a week. He never dreamed people would spend this much on thier dogs LOL He is a true farm boy. Before I had my own shop I drove an hour to work in a vet clinic. I was slow at first but when people know your services and you can give them good quality, they spead the word for you. For those of you wanting to groom from home, or just starting, hang in there! If it can happen for me, it can happen for you!

I groom from home. I was looking into going commercial but the town has been giving me a hard time. I have decided to keep it at my home. I know I have a really good situation here. If my daughter is sick or it's a snow day I am home. I work about 4 days a week, half days, I could be more busy and am thinking of expanding. We'll see....

Groom from home. I started at home because it was the only way I could afford to start doing it on my own. I used to dream about opening my own salon in a commercial location, now I wouldn't trade it for what I have. Love being at home!

Angie, how long did it take you to be busy 5 days a week? And what was your best advertising method? I'm still frustrated about how few dogs I'm getting - even tho a lot of people have called to come back, there are lots of weeks that I have nothing. (like this week) I think everyone has been happy but I'm just not real patient.

Groom at home, in the garage. The worst part about it is I can't really fix my garage up like a shop, city regulations says it is a parking area only. So my shop looks like a garage with grooming equipment in it. But I LOVE working at home. I've tried shops and didn't really like it, except having other groomers around to talk to. I guess talking to just dogs will have to do. lol

                        home grooming

I work at home for the last 18yrs, we built a 14x14 room attach to the house. I love it because it's alot quieter than a Vet Clinic where I worked at for 14yrs.I can book my dogs the way I want to.
I can run in and start supper or do a load of wash while a dog is drying. And if I have a no-show I can go in and get on the computer.
And most of all my dog can see me all day so she not lonely, it was a great help to housebreak her.

Home biz here for almost 5 years, and I love it!
Old groomers never die, they just go at a slower clip.

                          Groom on!!!

                            Terry,
I'm the only groomer in the area (we have 4 of us) that takes big dogs, and cats and work on Saturdays. That helped me get more clients. I also am on the Humane Society Board and I groom dogs from the shelter when needed. They bring them here. Whenever a pet gets adopted, one of my business cards goes home with them also. I do offer a pick up and delivery on small pets for an extra charge. I am in the yellow pages, and ran a few ads when I started. I do offer a free grooming certificate once in while to our shelter's fundraisers which that method has gotten me quite a few regulars. Hang in there. Word of mouth is the best advertising there is. I havnt had to advertise in 2 yrs. You'll be busy soon enough.

I have a home shop but I also work 2 days a week at another shop. I can't wait till I'm busy enough to be home full time. I have been open a year and I'm not near as busy as I'd like to be. Sometimes I get really discouraged but everyone keeps telling me it takes time, especially being home and not being located at a commercial spot where you would be more visible. Hopefully things will pick up.
