  • Bought a Speed Feed and.....

I used it on a poodle yesterday. Set the blade to 15 and noticed that it was nicking between the pads and toes on the poodles feet! What's up with that? I love the convenience and feel of the SF but I certainly don't want to use it if it isn't as safe as my clippers/blades. Anybody else have this problem or am i doing something incorrectly?

      I found mine

nicked a bit too. Part of it was my handling but also I switched to a metal blade and use the 30 for inbetween pads. Seems I don't ever have the problem anymore and I do many bath and tidy inbetween grooming services in which I only use my Speed Feed. It could be a poor blade which mine might have been too.
Money will buy you a pretty good dog but it won't buy the wag of it's tail.

        What I think

Compare the teeth on the blade to the teeth of a normal 15. They are probably wider apart on the Laube, hence the nicking tendency since more skin can get between. Unfortunately, I noticed this when using the #40, and was getting a lot of nicks when I don't usually get any with a regular blade. That's when I compared the spacing of the teeth.

Personally, I believe that if a blade is supposed to accommodate changing from a #9 or #10 blade to a finer blade (like a #40), the teeth should be made like the finest blade for safety reasons. Hope they change it soon.

Sounds like your blade may be misaligned, put it on the 40 setting and see if it is wonky or the cutting blade is too close to the edge.

I think like anything new, there's a learning curve when first starting to use it.

I've been using a speed feed for 4 years now and hardly ever get a nick, but when I first got it, I did get nicks more often.

The blade is set at a different angle then our regular clipper blades and they are finer and pointier, so you have to get used to it. As some one else said (which I've never had a problem with) some blades that come from the factory misaligned, so you'll want to check that.

Once you get used to using it, you'll never want to be without it

I've never had any problems with mine at all. Still using the same batteries even!

I love the Speed Feed and never had a problem with #30 or #40 between toes. But I often turn the clippers upside down. Can't imagine what your problem is. Also, I change my blades often, but that's just me.....

I've been using a SF for 4 yrs. now. I usually use the #30 setting when doing poodle feet. I rarely nick a dog using the SF. I do, however, clean out the blade with pressurized air and oil it every time I use it.

Gotta agree with NeaNea. The angle of the clipper is slightly different than a Moser for example, and IMO Is better for use. I never use the 15 for feet, so cannot say if it is the setting or not. I almost ALWAYS use a 40, rarely a 30. You cannot PUSH this clipper, you have to allow it to clip. Also, NEVER use it on dirty hair.

If you have a blade that is dragging then Try a new blade. THEN return the bad blade to Laube with a WRITTEN letter. I agree, sometimes the customer service is lacking. I also think their product is mostly worth the aggrevation. Its not the clipper that is the problem, it is the BLADE. Even Oster and Andis put out bad blades that are brand new.

I had two blades not work right out of the package. Never got them replaced but did get them sharpened and they lasted well afterwards.

AS for the teeth spacing, they are TIGHT. MUCH tighter than a Moser. Not sure they can make them any tighter and still get the lengths they are offering.

Personally I LOVE this clipper and use it daily, sometimes as my ONLY clipper. I can groom anything, including husky shavedowns and cats with this clipper. Not sure what I would do if I didnt have it to use.

That's precisely why I bought it! I had heard such great things about the SF that I bought one as soon as I had the extra cash. I do love the feel of it and how it handles. Perhaps there is just a learning curve involved but I will also follow advice and check the blade alignment just to be sure. Thanks for all the help.

PS: it's also great for wet shaves

Especially on those tiny lil legs that seem to mat so tight to the skin, a regular blade just can't get in there tight enough.

This happened to me too. I posted about it awhile ago. I love my speedfeed, but started having trouble with it nicking no matter how careful I was. I thought it must be me,as I inspected my new blade many times and couldn't find anything wrong, My daughter found the problem by setting it to #40 and looking closely at the teeth, theere was a slight misalignment, and crooked thing happeneing,so set on #40 it was really a ahzrd! This was a brand new blade. My supplier Adam's New Edge sent me a new blade, and let me keep the wonky one for use under combs, and I haven't nicked or rashed with the new one. Sounds like youmight have a bum blade.
