  • I have a silly question

Now that I can be in control of the shampoo and conditioner at the salon I'd like to start using conditioner on a regular basis instead of just when the dogs are matted.
Is there a rule of to follow for what breeds to NOT use it on?
And what brand seems to work the best...I'm on the scent of the month club wth TropiClean and do use D-Mat.
    HELP!!!

My favorite all-purpose conditioner is Iv San Bernard's PEK, ridiculously expensive... but works well on chows and yorkies alike! It does a great job of restoring moisture balance to the skin/coat without over-softening. Big hairies dry in a flash and their undercoat just slides out! Other than the PEK, I'd be hard-pressed to find one conditioner to handle every job. Personally, I don't usually condition poodles/bichons and some yorkies (depending on their coat/trim).
Bulldogs are adorable, with faces like toads that have been sat on.

I usually use a leave on conditioner from Show Seasons. I really like it. The only dogs that I don't condition are really oily ones.I think I have one really oily Yorkie and a couple of Cockers. I don't condition the ears if they tend to be oily either. It's so dry and cold around here these days I like to make sure that I do a good conditioning on them. I do have a couple of heavier conditioners that you can use like a hot oil treatment. I use them occasionally when I get a really dry coat and skin. I think they are from Nature's Specialties.

I use conditioner on almost every dog. The only ones I usually don't are the wiry terrier coats, but I will use it on furnishings. I like a few different conditioners, it depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. On dogs like full-coated Maltese and Shih Tzus I'll use something heavier (any "cream rinse" theres a nice one by BioGroom) to help keep the coats tangle-free and give a nice silky look. On coats that I don't want to be weighed down, like Poodles, Bichons or any dog that needs a really light conditioner to help seal the hair follicle I LOVE Chris Christiensen's After Rinse. It has a really light, pleasant scent and helps keep static away also.

          Shawn,
Are you wanting to condition every dog? I can tell you since I have started with Why Bitch shampoo by Joy a few years ago it is very rare for me to condition a dog. I bath them once not twice, and they are so clean. I have saved so much time, energy, and money, they dry quicker and rinse soo clean. I have simplified my life with this product and my clients never complain they love it.
I believe you stated you have used product but you need to revisit it if you are not using it daily, can I say simplify, budget wise, customer satisifaction wise it is the best for my business. Yes, I have conditioner on board, Do I use it daily? No. Weekly? no. It seems just to weigh the coat down. Just trying to help and JMO.

Exactly what she said! lol. I do have quicker slicker for drying big hairys and fluff out for some of the fluffy ones, but dont even have to use the fluff out much. I love the sent of quicker slicker and do use it on doubble coated dogs, but do not even use conditioner any more. I have it here in case I decide I need it, but the gallon has found its way to the WAAAYYYY back of the storage area. Seriously, go ahead and get a gallon, use it for a while on every dog, and see how you like it. You wont regret it.

My favorite conditioner is Show Seasons Naturals Leave-in. It smells so good and it makes their coat so soft and shiny.

I almost NEVER use conditioner, I find I really don't need it. If I am dematting a dog I will use Stazko's spray, before I HV to help blow mats apart, and than I spray again when brushing with my stand dryer. I have never really like conditioner weighing down the dogs coats (I have tried just about everything "good" out there). I prefer a good quality shampoo, and a good "finishing" (anti static, demat, all the same type os sprays to me) spray.

Just my preference I know a lot of groomers like to use conditioner, I just never have liked it, I also find a lot of times it makes drying take longer.

Oooh Lucky [email protected] I love that stuff. I haven't used it in a couple years, but this is good stuff. But anything from Iv San Bernard is $$$ - but good.

I condition every dog. Poodles and dog's that I want the hair to stand out I use IOD's 2 Build. For dogs that have undercoat that needs to be removed I use the leave in conditioner by Quadraped. For shorter hair dogs a more diluted conditioner (currently use are using Keri-cot by Double K--we really like the smell). If I want more conditioning I don't dilute it as much. I also use AfterBath by Chris Christensen on my terriers and other dogs that I really don't want to soften the hair. I have a few other conditioners that I use when the mood hits me.

Conditioner is more about sealing in the moisture in the hair shaft and the skin than dematting. Here in Utah it is so DRY! Even the most gentle shampoo is going to remove oils and allow skin and hair to dry out. So every dog gets conditioner. Besides conditioned hair is so much nicer.

Ditto poodlemom! Why Bitch Shampoo rocks! Seriously, I hardly ever condition, and I do use quicker slicker too.
