i only require visual proof of cat rabies. dogs i will take their word for it, unless i have reason to suspect otherwise. i am mobile and because i am higher priced than the shops, most of my customers spend alot at their vets for the care of their dogs. cats on the other hand,if it is an indoor cat some owners don't bother. i 've already had to get a rabies shot myself because of a cat bite. won't happen a second time.Certified Master Pet Tech Pet CPR, First Aid and Care Instructor

If a dog were to bite you bad enough that you had to go to a Dr or hosp, the Dr has to report it. If the dog has not had its rabies vaccine, the dog will be taken away from the owner for a quarentine period. So. It is in your best interest and the dogs, and the owners that you require rabies vaccine.
Our hospital manager told me its also a workers comp and Ins. issue Also if you end up ever having employees, and an employee got bit by a rabid dog or suspect and had to have the vaccines( I know pretty unlikely ) they could probably sue you for not requiring it in your shop since its the law in most states.. ect. (the law that all dogs have it, not that groomers require it)

I require proof of rabies for grooming, and boarding rabies, bordatella, and distemper. They have to bring me the paper though, or the vet has to call or fax over, I don't take their word for it, too many people insisting that they have it, and come to find out they don't. I have even had people bring me their other pets or neighbor's etc papers for their dog thinking that I won't notice the name so I always verify the peoples name, dogs name, breed or color of dog and date of vaccination. Most people are fine with it, and if they tell me that they have been coming forever, why don't I trust them I tell them that it is nothing personal and that I ask everyone. I also tell them that it is for their dogs wellbeing as well as mine. Most people appreciate it and willingly bring it.Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job. ~Franklin P. Jones

In many states, it's the law that dogs must have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. We check for rabies, distemper, and bordetella (although we sometimes let the bordetella slide, since it's not a vaccine that is usually given without specifically asking for it).

In our state it is the law that the dogs are current on rabies and distemper, and if I was caught grooming a dog that wasnt current, by the inspector, I'd be out of business. They are pretty picky about it around here. But I love it that they are. Too many people let thier pets vacc "slide" and not keep them up to date.
I'm in a rural area so alot of farmers dont really take the time to vet the dog. On the other hand,I have ALOT of wonderful clients who treat thier pets like they are children LOL (or better than thier children.)
But, I have had new people call and get mad because I wont groom thier pet without proof.

We require proof of rabies vaccination for grooming dogs and cats. For one thing it's state law. For another, as already pointed out, if you are bitten badly enough to require medical treatment the doctor or ER is required to report it. If the dog hasn't been vaccinated, the dog has to be quarentiened for 10 days, and the owner is fined. And because a rabies vaccination is required for a dog to be licenses, if the rabies isn't current, most of them aren't licensed. And they get a fine for that, too.

I require they be current on their rabies vacc. and will verify. I will admit that in some instances where they are only slightly overdue or if the pet is really senior and has had shots it's whole life I don't worry much. Cats and strange or nervous looking animals (or owners) are a different story, I'm strick when it comes to those types.

About 7-8 years ago, a friend of one of my co-workers was bit by a dog that ended up having rabies. Although now the process has changed a bit (meaning it has, apparently, become a less painful process now), at that time the groomer had to have a series of about 12 injections into her stomach to combat the illness and the dog, of course, was put down.
