SAN MATEO -- A pet groomer will stand trial on animal abuse and animal cruelty charges filed in connection with the death of a 1-year-old Dachshund left in his care earlier this year, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.

Juan Zarate, 38, of Hayward, was ordered held over for trial following a preliminary hearing Monday in South San Francisco.

Prosecutors said a San Mateo man brought Henry, a long-haired Dachshund, and two other dogs to the PetSmart in San Mateo to have their nails trimmed on May 15. Zarate took Henry to a back room but rushed out three minutes later with the dog, which was unresponsive and had foaming blood streaming from his mouth, according to prosecutors.

An on-site veterinarian was unable to revive Henry and Zarate was arrested the same day.

A necropsy later revealed the dog had been strangled to death. He also suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung.

In addition to holding Zarate over for trial, Judge Donna Little denied his request for a modification to the terms of his release, which prevent him from living with any animals. Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti said Zarate's fiancée has a pet cat.

Zarate is out of custody on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court for an arraignment on Aug. 23.
