  • Fire evacuation plan

Our strip mall had a fire drill today and I was wondering what kind of plan your shop has in case of a fire or unexpected drill to evacuate animals safely. We have many slip leads hanging on hooks and I would imagine we can quickly loop the dogs and rush them out either front or back doors.

I'm more concerned with other tenants, not my own shop. We have a Chinese restaurant anchoring the center and a kitchen fire is a real possibility or any of us can have an electrical fire break out especially with rooftop air conditioning units running all summer.

I have cage banks with wheels. I can roll them out in about a minute. I've done a couple of test runs. I also have plenty of slip leads within easy reach, but my main plan largely hangs on just rolling the cages out with the dogs in them. Mine is a low volume shop which makes this probably my most practical option.

My biggest fear is a fire breaking out when I'm not there. I'm such an obsessive nut about it that I have basically set up a small apartment in the back with all necessary amenities so that I can stay onsite when I have boarders.

We have a storage unit behind our business and we keep some fold down cages, leads, water, bowls, food storage pet food, batteries, flash lights mostly.

It is so VERY important to have a plan in place and simulate a drill. When I asked about the fire safety plan at my last place of employment she didn't have one! Then she came back and said we'd just slip lead the dogs and put them in our cars! Oh yeah...multiple dogs fighting on my fine Corinthian leather...I think not! Not to mention we didn't have enough slip leads to allow one for each dog to enable a quick exit. Fire won't wait cause you only have two slip leads. At least when I pointed that out she did purchase more leads, but in almost three years still not a single fire drill. I guess I am a hope for the best, but prepare for the worst type with way too much safety training. My point is, since we are responsible for others lives PLEASE read Mary's article, assign each employee a fire drill task (reduces confusion and mayhem),and practice your plan periodically.

The main thing I worry about is if you have several pets and no time, you let them loose but once outside will they get away.

Agree 100%. Businesses with kitchens and all that equipment would worry me. We had a gas station next door that had a kitchen for mostly Asian food to go and 3 times there have been fires.
