These pictures say it all. This poor poodle hadn't been groomed in a year!!! The owners were so ignorant and didn't bat an eye when I showed them the pelt my bather/apprentice had shaved off. WAIT UNTIL I POST THE PHOTOS OF HIS TOE NAILS!! The little guy was very sweet, and quite pudgy, so he was well fed, just not well-groomed!

Oh people like this make me so crazed!!! The sad thing is that you will probably never make them "see the light" as far as their dogs grooming needs are concerned. If you think they will be smart and get a Beagle for their next dog, you are wrong. It will probably be another Poodle.....grrrr

I did a poodle mix last week that looked like this. Dog was 18 years old, nearly 6 inches of mats. Owner says they didn't have the dog groomed because they keep thinking it's going to die. <sigh>

I DID! 8 weeks from now they have an appt. for a bath n brush. I'll call them the night before and remind them---I may even make a little comment about neglect, humane society, etc...without a direct threat, lol.

Not as naked as he would have been if he went up the road a mile or so. We got a #7 through him without too much of a hitch.

I know many refuse/dilike to do dogs like this. And while it make me sad I kinda enjoyed it knowing how much better I was making them feel. It is so frustrating to know that you can't change peoples ways but knowing that WHEN I do get my hands on the dog I can make it life better always helped

My apologies to all. It was a #10---ONLY because I had my apprentice/bather do it, and I didn't want it to get cut, and I didn't want it to take all day. She likes shaving down dogs so I figured better her than me, and she can get some experience. I'd forgotten about that. But It really wasn't so tight that we couldn't get a #7 through it...I'm pretty sure it was a #10 though now that I am thinking about it. Safer for a newbie.

By looking at those two pictures I would never have guessed they were the same dog. Look how incredibly happy the dog looks in the after picture. I can only imagine how much different he feels. I bet he has a new outlook on life (especially now since he can see, lol!). Very nice job!

spikey, nothing like breakin em in right......don't sugar coat it.....just throw her to the wolves!!! lol weren't you afraid of giving a newb something that matted?...you're braver than me. i had a golden doodle that looked just like that last week...new owners, new dog. i said you know she has to be shaved right?......(owners)"well, we were kind of hoping".......... (me)sorry, this girl is matted to the skin"....... (owner) but i brush her everyday.my last dog was a mastiff "(me) sure, and next you're going to tell me you thought the knot under her neck was a tumor!"(owners husband) baahahahahabaahahaha , "my wife wanted to take her to the vet because she felt a lump....i told her that she had knots......bahahaha" well , i don't know if the wife was as happy with me as the husband was.........but i shaved the dog bald.....#10 a/o.....and i still got a $20.00 tip.......so, moral of the story is ......use humor....it works for me!!
i do feel sorry for these little guys, but i don't always agree with everyone that says they'll never take care of them . or, they probably won't bring them back.......there are people that won't. but i have found many people that will... i once told a woman that she was sooo worried about her dog, that she was neglecting him......i made a regular client out of her, because i earned her trust. i have found that alot of people don't bring their dog to the groomers because they are afraid. Afraid we will be mean to their dog. afraid we will hurt their dog...Face it.....we don't read in the paper......Nice groomer gives hugs to each dog when they are done and sings to them! No, we only hear the bad stories......so pet owners hear the bad stories.....so it is up to us, to show them that they can trust us with their beloved family member.So..... they get up enough nerve, to bring their dog to the groomer, and what do they get.........a mean, rotten, angry, bad attitude groomer. now this is only an example of things i have seen in my life. with groomers i have worked with. but i sometimes understand why the people wouldn't want to come back. look at that groomer through the owners eyes. they want someone to trust. someone to be kind and take care of her pet. and this groomer looks like she's ready to kill because this pet owner brought in a matted dog. give them a chance. educate them. earn their trust, and you may surprise yourself and earn a lifetime client.

This is what I get enjoyment from. I love to see a finished dog after it comes in like this, you know. It is just like seeing an untrained dog pulling its owner around, and then after it gets done with its obedience training, it is walking beside the owner. LOVE IT!
