  • Comb is a dealdy weapon- lol

Boy, did I have a freak thing happen to me today. I was finished grooming an australian shepard. I unhooked the grooming loop to take the dog off the table, and he started to jump (The table was still up pretty high). I put my hands up to prevent him from jumping off. I was holding my comb in my hand at the time, and when he pushed forward, somehow three teeth of the comb punctured the skin on my and went in quite far. I felt it, and looked at my hand and the comb was just hanging. Of course I pulled it out and the three puncture wounds started bleeding like crazy! Now my doesn't want to bend. (and its my scissoring !). How wierd was that? Never would I think I could do something like this.

Is your swollen? I'm wondering if that could cause an infection? Hope you cleaned the puncture wounds. Never know what could be on the comb.

Hope the starts working for you. At least you have Sunday to give it a rest.

      Ouch

Almost better you than the dog. Likely just so swollen that it doesn't move, but soaking and perhaps a doc may be in order. Hope you have Sunday and Monday off to heal, quickly.

I'll tell you between the regurgitation/squirts explanation and your good communication explaining this awful accident and I'm starting to cringe when I pull up this board, lol, sort of.
Money will buy you a pretty good dog but it won't buy the wag of it's tail.

is it one of the round handled ones?? I love them, but they are sharp and will cut groomers (and other things) very easily.

Scullymom- YES! It was a round handled comb. It's my favorite one! I guess I'll have to be more careful in the future.

Ouch!! I know what you mean and once they get under the nail it happens like 3-4 times in a row.

If I had a dime for every time I rammed a greyhound comb under my fingernail, I'd be ready to retire soon!

Furry, I have had dog's "freak" when lowering my table, so maybe you'll find this helpful:

I never unhook the grooming loop from the arm until the table is all the way lowered. Before that, I put a lead or collar and leash on the dog and as I'm lowering the table, I have hold of the leash, AND I will stare directly at the dog's body to see its reaction to the table moving. I let the table down very slowly. Sometimes I will strap my arm underneath the dog's belly when moving and/or lowering the table.

I hope your heals soon, I know how painful those combs can be, but can't imagine being punctured so severely by it!

I've gotten myself under the fingernail with my comb numerous times. Actually with my brush too. Ouch.
One time I forgot that I had a dematting rake on the floor, and I stepped on it. It went straight through my shoe, and stopped probably a centimeter from going into my foot!!! Boy am I evey careful raking out a dog after that!

Oh, yeah, I just brushed my wrist with a slicker brush a week ago. It STILL hurts. GRRR...

I was addicted to round handled combs for years, and would not touch anything else. I was sent a Chris Christiansen comb by my mom, and threw it in my grooming drawer like whatever. More than a year later I tried it and I have to say I would have trouble going back. They don't stab yah as easy either. Just a thought, because I know how painful that is!!

I have a habit of holding my slickers by the square backing while wet brushing out wee mats (this all while holding the hair at the base so the dog doesn't feel the pull), and sometimes my fingers slide over too far and I stab myself with those sharp tines...owie! I do this ALL the time.
