  • Them Screwey Scotties

Does anyone else have a problem with these guys, or do all of the scotties out there hate me? In my shop we do 7 scotties on a regular basis, they all bite and are the nastiest little things. I have asked, none seem to be related 4 are black, 3 are the wheaten color, all of them are miserable. What is the deal? I can say this I am not taking anymore of these guys!!

Scotties Can, and do have a mind of their own

I just answered a post on how to groom scotties. I referred her to Barney Bush the first dog, and melissa Ver P' lanks book notes form the grooming table. Ya can't groom them to perfection if they have to wear muzzles....many do. Even Barney Bush doesn't come to Pres when called til he is good and ready! Barney thinks he is the president! I have had a few sweet females. Maybe the females are nicer. I think Ms Beasley is adorable! Late in the year, but I just enjoyed watching the christmas barney cam video. I did not own a computer in Dec. I have been bitten by a male scottie.Maybe the Groomers helper would help?

Alot of groomers seem to have problems with them, but I do tons of them and really enjoy doing them. It's a very rare day that I don't have a minimum of 2 or 3 Scotties in!lol I have very few that are biters, and if they do, it's usually for nails.

        I love Scotties....

I was told by several people over the years I've groomed to never do Scotties because they are the nastiest things around. I have yet to be bitten by one. I have never even had to come close to muzzling one. I had my only Scottie I do in the other day. She is my little angel. She would attack the previous groomers, she even took a chunk out of my boss. She follows me around and lets me do anything to her. She even tried to bite one of the boarding girls when she was only trying to put a bandanna on her. So now I get to do put a bandanna on her. It's usually the last thing done right when the owner picks them up so they can't shred it. Her card says, kennel shy, muzzle for front legs and the biting box is checked. I have yet to have one problem with her. She's going blind now though, so that might change. She's only 3 and has a degenerative eye condition. She has to have eye drops for the rest of her life and they leave her muzzle so greasy. I scrubbed her face and couldn't get it out.

So I believe other groomers when they say all their Scotties are nasty. Maybe it's me and that I love that breed so I'm always extra super nice to them that I haven't had a problem. I don't know. But I have never met a mean one yet. Or well one that's mean to me.

I think most of this is down to breeding, I used to do a few in the US when I lived there and we refered to them as the Aligators (with the typical Aligator death roll....) they were ill tempered *&%$.. a couple were ok for most work untill you got to there feet/nails.. then devil dog apeared.
But since I ve moved over here (Scotland) all the ones I do are compleate sweethearts, 2 of them even hold there paws up for nails.. its like a compleatly difrent breed altogether. very sweet temperment. Love them
But I think a lot of it has to do with breeding, and most of the ones in the US arnt exzactly bred fer the best temperments....

They tend to sit a lot! That's the only issue I've had.

All my scotties are nice except some of them bite for their front feet nail trim. Other then that they are sweeties. They definitely have a will of their own though and it works best if you make them believe its THEIR decision to be groomed hehe.

personally, i think it's in the breeding, and it has to do with where you live. the former scottie breeder i work with agrees. when i lived in NJ i used to get sooo many miserable scotties. now i am in Fl and most of the scotties i groom are nice. when i lived in NJ all of my westies were great. down here their all screwballs. so i've converted from westie lover to scottie lover.

You watch the Scottie ring at a show and they have turf wars like it was the only spot on earth. Every one that I groom is the nicest and really sweet.
Never have a problem with them.

Most of the scotties I have run across are very high strung and nervous but not vicious biters though. A lot of them do take a little extra gentle smooth talking care and patience then are great once they get used to you and I had two from the same family who just couldn't bring themselves to stand for more than two seconds but with a little work and patience they were slowly getting it.

I would rather groom a chow that hadn't been groomed for five years instead of a scottie! I think scotties are the cutest but every single one I've groomed has been very snappy and difficult.

I have two black ones, Angus & Joey who are really good. I am cautious though when I do groom them because I know they could inflict a good hard bite due to their jaw strength.

When I was @ school we were warned to be careful as some of them tend to be quite nasty.

Sorry to hear that you've got all nasty ones though. It's really too bad because they look so good when they are all finished!

Scotties are actually my favorite breed to groom, although some are difficult for nails. But, the other groomers I have worked with always hate doing scotties Sometimes I think they know how we feel about them and respond to that.

                            They have biiiiig teeth

I'd rather clean cesspools than clip Scotties nails, lol. I think the problem is breeders will breed for the spunky feisty macho Terrier, not for sweetness. Three that come to my dog show conformation practice ring night are snarling and snapping. We all scowl, but sort of ignore them and their owners. It seems that they think it's an attribute, sparring and looking tough.
Money will buy you a pretty good dog but it won't buy the wag of it's tail.

All the girls I do are sweeties. the one boy i've done was bad on his nails. I'm the only one who will do Scottys/Westys/Carins at my shop. Everyone there has had a bad experiance. I like them and they don't seem to give me problems
Never gonna know if you never even try
