  • Brush out appointments in between groomings...

Does anyone offer clients a just a brush brush out in between regular groomings? Do they have to rebook for a certain amount of weeks for you to do this? Do you charge by time, up their current grooming price to accommodate, or do it for free? If you charge, how do you decide on a price? Without mentioning any prices of course.

I do a Face, Feet and Fanny appt in between full grooms and this also includes nails, ear cleaning and belly. I normally charge 10 less than a full groom and I mostly do it on Bichons who's owners want them fluffy but can't maintain the coat at home.

You just have to make sure the owners know the dog cannot be matted to receive the FFF service.

That's about the same for me, have a bath/minor trim available and many clients schedule every two weeks - with every other appointment being a full groom. I also have just a bath charge, what I charge for short hair baths and if a grooming client come more frequently - no minor trimming, I'll just charge them a bath. For example, I have 3 shih tzus that come in every week - 2 weeks bath only, 3rd week groom. If someone were going every other month I'd insist on a bath minor trim/groom.

Also, I've had clients in the past that want a bath every other week, but just a comb out the weeks in between (Maltese for example.) That's about $1.00/min. Would not offer for non-regulars - must have standing appointments.

I do the Feet, Face and Fanny as well (and that is what I call it...lol). I charge 10-15 dollars less than a full groom and they have to reschedule it within 4 weeks of the last full groom.

          Is this without the bath?

I won't trim a face/feet really without a bath because it always looks weird to me. I can never get the hair to lay right when it's dirty unless it's ridiculously short. If a customer insists I always tell them that and I'm not liable if it looks silly! (I do my best of course)

I offer everything thats included in a groom a la carte (nails, ears, anals, teethbrushing, brushouts, etc) in between appts if a customer wants maintenance. When a dog is matted, I charge $40/hr more on top of the grooming price, and I also charge that by itself for in between baths.

I think it's important to offer more options to customers to help take care of their animals. I also teach owners how to brush their pet. Anything to help!
There are 3 different kinds of people in this world: Dog people, cat people, and rational people who don't have a problem liking two things at the same time.

I do and lots of my clients do it. Some alternate between trim and full groom, others have 2 or 3 trims between full grooms. I do a tidy (sani, face and quick tidy of outline) and a thin and tidy (coat king, sani, face and quick tidy of outline). Tidy is $20 less than full groom, thin and tidy is 10 less than full groom. All in all you make more money per year from the clients than if they only came for full grooms, the dogs are easy to do and only take half the time of a full groom even if that so you make a higher hourly amount. Plus these dogs are great advertising because they always look good.

                WITH a bath!

I'm guessing that due to the amount "off" the grooming that was quoted, that those tidies included the bath.

Besides, honestly, most times you will not be able to keep a problem coat with brushing only. If the owners aren't coming in every 4 weeks (and the coat must be a length that can go 4 weeks without good owner care), then you should really bath and fluff and comb, in my experience.

I have posted on this board before about my 'comb out' service. Been doing it for years. NO bath, NO trimming... just a brush & COMB out. Of all my services most are walk in - no appt needed... but comb out?.. you bet I need an appt.

Way to many owners have issues. They cant or wont do anything in between groomings. Not to mention the economic issues of late (but I have always had a large elderly clientele on fixed incomes) I worked with an 'old' groomer years ago who did it, so I just thought it perfectly normal.. not until working at so many other places that didnt did I realize that I had a nitch.

It can be an easy money thing really.. I charge $5 for every 15 minutes spent on any one dog. If there is matting, I include that in the base price (but it can take you longer so it adds up) I have SO many clients who love this. They have 'issues' with their pet so they would happily pay me to do what they 'could' be doing at home... no sweat!

I have it posted though and explain to anyone interested. NO BATH, NO TRIMMING, any other services are listed by price sepreately. I dont like the idea of piece meal or al-a-carte grooming but I do know may who would rather pay me the money than have their pet mat up and have to be either charged big time for de-matting or shaved.

Yeah I do the same as you. I offer a full groom and also a bath and tidy. I don't like working on dirty dogs but what I'm wondering about is if people offer just brush outs(no nails, no bath, etc) between full groomings for clients that like a longer look but are having a hard time keeping up with brushing or for the heavy shedders that are on a furminator schedule.

                      Express Mini Groom

The FFF is definitely WITH a bath.

Here is another option: I also do a 15 min express mini groom while you wait. This service is without a bath and includes a nail trim, ear cleaning, brush out, cologne and bandana for $1 per minute. Once again, no dematting is done so dogs must be in decent condition.

I have actually had new people come to me for this service after their dogs were deemed ungroomable at other shops. It's a good way for owners to try you out in an effort to see if you will be able to work on a difficult dog. This way, they do not have to leave the dog and pay for a full price groom, and you do not have to block out 1+ hours in your schedule for a dog who may be sent home for bad behaviour.

When I had clients with dogs in full coat I did a brush out once a week or so. I charged for the time it took me. Made my life a lot easier when they came in for their 'full groom' which of course was pretty much just a FFT bath and brush. I usually didn't need to worry about nails or ears because they were regular clients. I always say any owner can have their dogs coat as long as they like so long as they brush or pay me to!
