I have the opportunity to acquire a very red 1 year old neutered standard poodle, but my question is, would this be a suitable color for competition in grooming? Have never seen one in any pictures at any competitions, and want to know what the reasons may be? Pros and Cons? I shaved him off (#7) last Oct for a client, he was a matted mess. He seemed to have a decent coat, but hard to really tell as it was matted solid. He had impressed me enough though to tell the owner, if she ever wanted to part with him, etc etc. Well, she contacted me yesterday. My best friend owns a nephew of this dog, and though hers was red as a pup, by the time he was a year old, he turned into an apricot/cream color. I don't think this one, however, is going to lighten. Temperment is awesome, he actually fell asleep as I did clean feet on him, and it was his first groom ever, and his last. Any opinions out there? What should I do? He is completely housetrained, is good with other dogs, but he does whine alot, I am told. Need input fast!

Trailbound, I think the reason you rarely see the reds are they have a not so good coat. (trying to be nice here) I have not seen many, but the generally are very soft, and difficult to work with, same with the apricots. So, if your guy has a good coat to work with, go for it. It is great he has kept the color as most do not. I do one mini, that I swore was an apricot, and when they showd me the puppy pics, he was the deepest red I had ever seen, this dog is only about 3 now. What does a dog do on it's day off?

He will likely fade in time...there are not that many reds that have really nice conformation either, as compared to blacks, whites, etc. If you are looking for competition, and you are serious about competing and winning, you may want to consider getting one from a show breeder...otherwise, if you are mostly just looking for a pet, go for it!Last edited by winterroo; 02-28-10, 05:22 PM.

I myself have a red standard. Scarlett was a deep red when I got her as a puppy and though she hasn't faded to light red, she has faded some.
She's got a decent coat but not at all what it takes to put in a show or "foofoo" pattern.
Keep him as a pet.~*~*~Shawn, C.M.G.~*~*~

I have doen some lovely redss over the years and others with awful coats. It really depends on the lineage I have found, the ones with nice coast were all related! I would probably take him since she might get rid of him to an awful home, you never know at least if the coat doesnt pan out you could place him or just have fun with him. There was a Red Std several years back at Westminster. Theprobem with "off" colours is so many people are afraid to dabble in them they dont get seen as much as they could. How many silvers do you see doing really well as Specials? Not many most Specials are blakc or white

I agree about the ****** coats. I got a red apricot st.poodle to compete with because every one else had black and white ones. The coat on her body is getting thicker but her legs are really flimsy! So I shaved her hoping it would thicken her up. She is turning 2 next month. It is my first poodle so I am learning as I go. She is very smart though.

That dane is beautiful, I just want to give him a big hug!~
My red standard poodle is a bit different than the rest of them, but really she is not bad and her coat is not half bad either. Now my red TOY poodle nice coat, but HATES to be groomed nice coat, but she gets a 7F just because she hates it.***Darlynn***
