  • limit laws

How many of you have heard about this law. Its where towns limit the number of pets that you are allowed. Some towns as little as 2 dogs not including puppies under 6mos. Others only allow you to keep more pets if you get permission from all your neighbors within so many feet of you. This law is not in the area where I live but some mn towns have passed this law. I really think its scary that some law could potentially force me to get rid of my babies. Most of these laws won’t grandfather you in either. I know there is no way I could sell my home in the short amount of time they allow you either. Anyway I was just wondering what others think of this.

Stephen: I have lived in areas like that at times, and quite some years ago.

I know there is a limit in the city I live in. It only regards dogs though, as far as I know. My neighbors have chickens which were grandfathered in because they've lived here for 30+ years.

They have this in my city

In my city it is 2 dogs and 2 cats you are allowed to have. I have 3 dogs and know several people with more than two in this city. It is a law that seems to only be enforced if they get complaints. There is a city close to me that the limit is 4 dogs, that would be nice. They have talked about changing it here, but hasn't happened.

That is quite common around here. Before moving to the city I'm in, I contacted the city to find out the pet bylaws. I didn't want to move to a city and find out I'd have to move because of restrictions in pet numbers.

I see all variations of laws.. I was doing some reading the other day and in my state it is illegal dye baby chickens, geese etc. ( its an animal cruelty charge) I wonder how thats different than dying dogs.. and how if some state agencey was bored or broke, if they would go a step further and call dying dogs cruel as well..

Its been that way for decades in Australia. In my state at least , generally it is 1 dog per attached dwelling , and 2 dogs for a stand alone house. Most apartment buildings here are No dogs. You have to be quite rural or in one of the animal husbandry zones that permit kennels, to keep more than 2 dogs.
I rarely see a group of more than 2 dogs for grooming !

Many years ago, we had 8 cockers-3boys and 4 girls. The limit was 3 DOGS. They did a house to house canvasing of the neighborhoods. My very honest mother got licenses for the three males and taped them up on the back door. We had 3 dogs-no one ever asked how many bitches we had. I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

My bather was worried about this because she has 5 dogs, but she went online and had one registered as a service dog (which does not count toward your #) so she would be at the limit. Then it turned out that the city she lived in had no limit anyway.

Where I live it's 4 WITHOUT a kennel license....I have no idea if there's a limit with one since at one time my mom had 13 dogs.
I currently have 3 dogs but will soon be adding a couple more

These limit laws only adversely affect those of us who are loving pet owners, others just turn the dogs loose and don't claim them. This is why limit laws need to be fought tooth and nail when they are proposed. These laws are proposed and pushed forward by PETA and the ASPCA--this is what money you donate to them goes to, not to save the pets like the commercials claim (check out the facts if you don't believe me). Your money should be donated to your LOCAL shelter or rescue group. The AKC tries to keep tabs on these proposed laws and makes people aware of them so they can try to fight against them.

Lisa, so true! My town had no limits. I went to the Chamber of Commerce after hours business thing in December and I was talking with our Mayor. I was trying to say we should get a dog park, etc.... and somehow it came out of my mouth that I have 4 dogs. She said, better not say that out loud, we have a limit of 3. I said since when? I guess sometime in the few months before, they passed some law about it. I was very suprised. Never heard a thing about it in the news, in the village newletter, nothing. I cant find it on the website for the village, I have found nothing on it at all. I hope I dont have any problems, I would assume I would not, since I have had my dogs before they passed it. I had a complaint a few years back from the neighbors about barking, I was so mad, the dogs were not even outside for 10 minutes, and it was only 2 of them, middle of the day on a Saturday, they were barking on and off for maybe, 5 minutes. Well guess what, that neighbor has parties all the time, very loud, all hours of the night, any day of the week. Very young people. Guess who gets complained on now.
What does a dog do on it's day off?

In our county here, they tried to 'gather information' as to what the citizens living in this county thought on the subject. The Health dept posted a VERY SMALL ad in the paper (about 3/4 inch tall x the standard width of 2 inches) and it was put in the section not many folks would look at.... WELL.. a few did... word got out... the meeting to gather this info was to be at the county health dept office... a main room of about 18 feet x 20 feet... 200 people showed up!

they passed around a sheet (had to add extras) for people to sign up to coment.. ended up being close to 10 pages... adn the 'War' began! Just abotu everyone wanted to know who proposed such an idea... the board tried to swing past this question again and again... but everyone there asked the same question. They ended up saying they would have to have another meeting in 2 weeks to finish the lists for comments..... 2 weeks later... people are arriving only to find they moved the meeting to another location in another town!

We drove like a bat out of He(( to get there... now it was up to 250 folks. Finally they had no choice but to let everyone know who proposed the idea..they are voted positions...

we are very rural here.. they have no right to vote on such a thing without public knowledge... the vote was not to limit.

enough folks said.. if you pass such a limit.. you wont get my tax money OR my vote..

how can they limit pets when they dont limit kids... my pets are my family... so many said they would burn down thier house or just move and let the county take over the bankruptsy... finally I felt relief..

Here we are allowed 3 pets , and we have a cat leashlaw. You can apply for a 'hobbyist' licsence. But as earlier stated it is not enforced unless there is a complaint. I know people who have 5 and up, it's just nosey whiners that cause problems.

We are aloud 7 (over the age of 6 months) total, no farm animals except for laying hens (and no slaughtering within city limits). That said, we have definitely had more than 7, as long as they are quiet and well cared for no one cares. I probably wouldn't get chickens though because my neighbors would complain about those since they are "dirty."

We are aloud to have three, which I am over the limit, one day I was talking with code enforcement and he asked How many dogs I had? I answered " A few". He then said ya right, I guess the poodle gates and flags don't help my cuase, they don't push the issue unless there is a complaint. Which I have a few but they don't bark much and they live in the house with me. Have had the same neighbors for years. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
