When is this nightmare going to stop? Now another company is recalling their food!

    CONTACT:
    Jamie Tully
    Victoria Hofsted
    212-687-8080

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Cincinnati, Ohio -- March 30, 2007 -- Eight In One, Inc., a division of United Pet Group, Inc., is voluntarily recalling nationally all lots of Dingo® CHICK’N JERKY treats due to Company concerns that the jerky treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall.

The products affected were sold at Target, PetSmart and other retailers. The products subject to this voluntary recall are Dingo CHICK’N JERKY 3.5 oz. and 8 oz. for dogs and Dingo Kitty CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz. for cats and Dingo Ferret CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz for ferrets.

Laboratory testing has shown that some samples of these chicken jerky treats were contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling all these products out of an abundance of caution.

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella can have some or all of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers..

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Apparently well animals can be a carrier and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The company has received one report of Salmonellosis in a dog. There are no reports of human illness.

These products are being removed from retail stores. Consumers should immediately stop feeding these treats to their pets.

Consumers who purchased any of the above-identified CHICK’N JERKY TREATS should discontinue use of the products and should discard the unused portion. Consumer can obtain information on receiving refunds by contacting the Eight In One consumer affairs department at 1-888-232-9889.

Retailer and other inquiries into this recall should also be directed to the Eight In One consumer affairs department at 1-800-645-5154 x 3.

That is a good reason not to feed raw chicken products.

yea, but a least this company isn't doing an " investigation " first and waiting 6 weeks to do a recall. so let's give them some credit.

So this doesn't even have anything to do with the other recall? Wow, that's awful that two recalls are going on at once. What is this world coming to? I've never known so much sickness and devastation. I was just talking to my mom about this. We know 4 people pretty close to us that were diagnosed with serious cancers or brain tumors, one guy we know was killed in a boating accident, 2 people we know were diagnosed with ALS. This is so awful, now all the foods being so tainted. I wonder if it could be in the human foods too? Any ideas?

fda doesn't BELIEVE the tainted wheat gluten got into the human supply. but what makes you wonder is that the supplier for 8 in 1 is also in china. i will be reading labels with more diligence than usual.

Salmonella doesn't have to be added to meat products to contaminate them. It's already there. Especially poultry. And it doesn't make a bit of difference if the poultry came from China, or across the street. That's why they're always telling you to wash your hands well after handling raw meat, to keep a seperate cutting board to use for meat, and to cook poultry well done before eating it. It's also why you can't get an egg cooked "over easy" in a restaurant in some states.

New info on Menu foods recall by waggin tails

New Information on Menu Foods Recall from Waggin Tails
                Dear Waggin Tails Customers

Since we wrote you last week about the pet food recalls, we have heard from many of you who are understandably confused and concerned about what to feed your animal companions and which brands you can trust. We apologize for the length of this email, however there is much information to provide you with. We have suspended sales of numerous brands and have provided that detail below.

We want to clarify one point, which seems to have been misunderstood from our last email. Menu Foods produces all types of pet food, from grocery economy brands to the best holistic brands. This is the same in both the human food world and pet food world. The fact that high quality holistic brands are being made by Menu Foods is in no way an indication that they are somehow not the quality you previously perceived them to be. Manufacturers develop recipes, source ingredients, set quality control standards and then give that formula to a co-packer or producer such as Menu Foods who makes the product to their specifications. Very few companies actually manufacture their own product, especially smaller holistic and organic brands.

The brands that we carry have been and will continue to be leaders in the holistic pet food industry. It would be a tragedy for anyone to conclude from this recall that all pet food is the same. There is nothing that could be further from the truth. In fact, we feel confident that in the end, we will all find that this recall was caused by inferior sourced ingredients by economy minded manufacturers.

However, in that there is still no conclusive explanation from the FDA or the AVMA of what happened and why, we will continue to suspend sales of any product made by Menu Foods for any Manufacturer (even if they do not contain wheat gluten). We need to be clear that these brands are NOT recalled. As soon as there is definitive information about the exact nature of the contamination, we will reinstate the brands temporarily taken down from our site

We do feel 100% confident that the manufacturers we carry on our website have your pet’s health as their number 1 priority and make products with that mission in mind. Having said that, we will be asking very hard questions about quality standards and give you our word that any product made by a company that either cannot or will not answer those questions will be permanently taken down from our site. In the coming weeks, we will be posting each company's quality assurance statement on our site so that you can be aware of where the product is made, where the ingredients come from and what quality control measures are in place.

                Sincerely,

                John Gigliotti
                President
