  • 40 blades

I use a 40 blade on pad's and on the leather of Schnauzers ears or anything that gets it's ears shaved. Does anyone else do this?

    Footpads, DEFINITELY!

When I quit using #10's and #15's for pads and started with a #40, the dogs were happier and so was I! You know what it's like even if there is a tiny clump of hair or mud in a dog's pad - the other blades don't get under as easily and so there is pulling and discomfort for many dogs. Plus it seems to me that with the other blades you have to apply more pressure to get the hair, whereas the #40 is a breeze and a lot of dogs don't even seem to feel it!

Ears? Sometimes, but usually not outer ear since I don't like it bald.

And I know a lot of people like #30 in the pads, but I prefer a #40 as I feel that a #30 nicks more easily than a #40 due to the tooth spacing, I guess.

Yeppers, and tipping yorkie ears, and inside of cocker ears and inside poodle and lhasa ears (rather than plucking the hair off the leather, I use a 40 against and clip out all visible hair from dogs with hair in their canals).

I use 40s on some ears

It seems tens just don't cut short enough anymore. I used a #40 yesterday on all four Schnauzer ears because they were afraid of the suction and I could barely get the job done. It edges well too. I think safer than scissors on the edges. I use 40s on pads too, or they don't clean up. I also fine those little hairs across the pads don't come off all that well unless I lift up the fur and suction it off. Again, safer than scissors.

I use my speed feeds set to the 30 or 40 length on pads. Tend to go longer on ears for the pets because most of the terriers I see aren't groomed often enough and I don't want any irritation.

I use a #40 on pads unless the dogs have foot issues (allergies, skin conditions) and I use a #40 on my standard poodles feet but use a #30 on most clients poodles, but a #15 on some sensitive poodles (it just doesn't look as nice though!)

For ears, I'll use a #40 on the inside, #30 on the outside, may clean up edge with #40, but find a #40 on the outside sometimes is just too short. Although works well on some yorkies.

I can't believe how years ago I started with a #10 on feet! How did they turn out good??? (OK, maybe they didn't

I use my Moser-40 blade on all feet even the Poodles, sometimes in ears but the only time I trim the outside of the ears with a 30-40 is on Yorkies, Westies.

Yep. 40 on pads, and all ear edges. Much safer than scissoring IMO.
Old groomers never die, they just go at a slower clip.

                    Groom on!!!

If I clip pads (and sometimes I don't, I scissor) I usually use a 40, or I'll do them with my Wahl Tidbit. The Tidbit blade clips at the same length as a 30, but the teeth are closer together, so it doesn't nick as easily. If the dog has a history of interdigital cysts, I never clip the pads, I only scissor. I also scissor if the feet seem irritated, or if the dog happens to be a long haired Dachshund.

I also use the 40 on the underside of the ears, but rarely on the upper part. There I do a 10. I will also use a toe blade at the ear opening if I have to, so I can get down into the ear canal a little farther.

I only use a 40 on the inside edge of the ear. I don't know if I can explain this but I'll try. I lay the edge of the ear on my middle finger and just shave the very edge od the ear pushing the blade into my finger. I dont know if this makes sense but if you do it you will never have to trim around an ear again. I sometime will use it instead of pulling the hair out of the ear. Not really a fan of that.

I use a 40 all the time for pads. Even on the inside of ears (not all the time though) I love it especially when you have the pet that has "rocks" in their pads, makes the job quicker and less painfull for the pet. I even love to skim the spare hairs off the bottoms of the feet so there's no need to scissor afterwards.

                              At the expo

this last week-end I heard someone say the 40 has wider spacing and can nick easier. Sure doesn't sound like it from the posts here. I've always been using a 30 for pads. Since 40 isn't to be used with Wahl I don't know even where I have a 40 to check the difference since I don't carry one in my grooming tool case anymore. Besides I use Speed Feed by Laube so I don't really need any 40 blade ;o).
Money will buy you a pretty good dog but it won't buy the wag of it's tail.
