  • Question for SHOW dog people...

I don't know anything about dog shows. I am learning much about my little dog, Icon, that is a finished champion. But I still don't understand it all.

Icon's father, Neutron, went BIS, and Best in Specialty winner, he was the "Best Toy" at the Poodle Club of America Specialty. How are all of these different?

If I recall, he went best of breed at Westminster?? I need to double check that one.

His grandfather, "Patty" (Essex Escapade At Sharbelle) is a specialty and all-breed BIS winner.

Now, I have a photo of Icon winning at a dog show. The sign they set up next to him says:

    "Best of Winners"--MAJOR--"Best Bred By"

What does that mean? I know "bred by" means "Bred by exhibitor" and that his handler is also his breeder...the rest is a mystery, lol.

Can't help you there Tammy. I am going to keep checking this thread to see if anyone knows the answer and is able to keep it "simple stupid" so I can understand....lol....

My brain turns to mush trying to keep all the catagories and abbreviations straight.

Nuetron sounds impressive. Those are some fantastic wins... BIS is Best In Show...all breed // Best in Specialty means he beat all the other poos at that show. Poodle club of American Best Toy...WOW top honors.

Best of Winners MAJOR means he won over all the other class poos (dogs and bitches)that day at that show, also dependent on how many points that day he recieved a 3 4 or possible 5 pt major. To become a CH in AKC the dog must have 15 pts two majors under two different judges. The majors are the tough ones to find ....sometimes.

Are you totally confused now... I think I got it right...lol

Ha ha, my co-worker has a Neutron son. His name is Gluon. All her dogs have to start with a "G". I have to ask you...does Icon tend to run in circles when he is excited or nervous? Every dog my co-worker has gotten from Sharbelle has this spinning thing they do. It's crazy.

Poodle Club of America Speciality is a show that is held every year in Salisbury, MD for all varieties of poodles. They do everything, conformation, obedience, agility, and everything else you can do with a poodle. It's a whole week long of fun with poodles.

After a dog is finished, if the owner chooses to continues showing it...it's then called a "Special" Specials are the dogs that go around showing all over the place gathering up points.

An All Breed BIS winner is a dog that won Best in Show at an all breed show.

Now, I'm just getting into the whole show thing, so I may not be 100% right on all of this. There are plenty of people on this board that can help you out though. It's pretty confusing. Especially when you get into how the majors work, and the points, and all the different classes. It's different for every breed, especially poodles because there are 3 different varieties. It was all explained to me...but I'm not sure I could explain it to you correctly. I'll let someone who knows more do that.

          Question for Dog show people

BIS means Best In Show BISS means Best In Speciality Show, like a show just for poodles. Best Toy means that of all the toy poodles entered he was the best. All Breed Best In Show means that all seven groups were represented at the show. In order to become an AKC Champion a dog must aquire 15 points. 2 sets of these points must be what are called majors, that enough dogs in your breed in your sex competed for your dog to get 3,4,or 5 pionts at one time, this called a major win. Best of Winners is choosen between winners dog and winners bitch, one is choosen by the judge and awared Best of Winners. I hope this helps. You can also go www.akc .org and get even more info on dog shows. Also www.infodog.com has alot of info.

Okay I do not show dogs but I believe best in specialty means that it was a specialty show like just for poodles, and best in specialty is sort of like a best of show but there was only one breed being shown.
Best toy at a poodle club show I would imagine is that there were only poodles shown and there are standard and miniature and toy poodles and he was the best toy. does that make sense? lol if not I'm sure there are others here that can explain better.

Nervous or not, Icon ALWAYS goes in circles. Always to the right...clockwise.

Thanks for the info, very helpful!

Tammy I bet you would really enjoy a subscription to Poodle Variety. I have one ,and recently bought a 1 year digital gift Subsc. for a dear poodle friend who is having chemo,to enjoy on her laptop. I have seen the lovely Sharbelle's in there. The Poodle Club of America is a website you would enjoy too.If you got to Poodle Variety site you can look at sample editions, and see lots of info, and pics too,

Awesome, Allan. I do know I have a keeper. I walk around my neighborhood and people always comment on him. Always. Spike is cute, but doesn't have "the walk," that Icon has.

I don't think it was ever said by anyone that to get to the winner's dog class, he had to win the Bred by exhibitor class, which means he was being shown by the breeder and won that class to go onto the winners dog class, and winning that, than beat out the winners bitch too, to get, "Best of Winners", but didn't win over the Champion dogs being shown for Best of Breed.

I was told that is has to do with being kenneled for extended periods of time. Being show dogs that makes sense, esp if you have a lot at once such as handlers or some breeders where having everyone out at once is not practical. It is how they exercize and entertain themselves lol. It becomes a force of habit, but I think it can lessen with time and a lil help. My friend has a toy poodle from another top breeder, and he does the same thing.. drives me crazy sometimes lol!

Actually, that's not true. My dogs have never been kenneled for any length of time, usually only at night. Some have never been kenneled at all. But every dog I've ever had would run in circles. I don't think it's a habit, either. It's just a dog thing.

Actually, Sarah Hawks just told me it's not necessarily the case. She has seen a dog do this same thing, even to the point of putting her paws in the same exact spot as before, lol.

Thats what I heard but then again, my 2 poodles dont do that at all. I have a mini and a toy and both have been kenneled while not supervise ie at work or in bed. And the mini lived with the toy in question. So then is it learned then?
