  • stopped tipping ?

Have any of you had a customer that used to tip every time and then stopped? i have had 2 people do this. It makes you wonder why. It bites, that's for sure!

Yep, noticed it too. Also Christmas tips were much smaller than previous years..at least they are still booking future appts. But yeah, it bites that the tips has dwindled..

I have some that tip less and maybe one or two that stopped. I think it is just the economy and would not take it personally.

I've had a few people who used to tip $10 start doing $5 - but I do think it's the economy.

I have noticed it with a few...but you have to remember that the economy is down as a whole, so a lot of people are really feeling it and probably just aren't able to tip like they used to. I'd just be happy to be making money right now, with these double blizzards I haven't been able to make it to work for almost a week now, lol

I agree. I've also noticed that now that I'm grooming from home I've lost a few tips.

Same here, some of them apologize and say they just don't have money anymore, I'm just happy they are still bringing in the dogs.

I wouldn't take it personally. We have a couple of clients that have started tipping less, or didn't tip as much for Christmas. There is a client that comes in every week with her Briard. She used to tip $15 every week. Now she tips $40 once a month. Saves her a little bit of money. I don't really mind, at least she still brings her dog in every week and she still trys to tip what she can. I'm sure it's just the economy.

I have a client (married to the president of a local bank) who stopped tipping me when I raised her price 2 bucks.

I've been lucky over all. While some tips have dwindled, I have new ones that are tipping $10 and just today $25! for the tips that have dwindled, I am sure it is the economy and like everyone else, I am just glad to have the dogs coming in.

*I'm going to step on a bit of a soapbox here if thats ok...this is not directed at any one person (I promise!) but something that just reminded me when I read this.*

Tipping is extra. In a perfect, polite world, the price of the service and how the employee gets paid would reflect a tip already so the consumer would not have to worry about if they should, how much, do they accept tips? and so on. Invariably someone is going to get upset. We should never EXPECT tips. We all have our customers that tip a certain amount every time, but every single time it is extra and they don't have to do it. Every time I get a tip I sincerely thank my patron and hope they give me another next time! It's nice, but not necessary.

I've been surrounded before by people that would complain that so and so didn't tip, or
"I did so much extra work and they didn't even appreciate it!" and so on. What about when they thanked you and told you Fluffy looked great? That's just as good to me! Sometimes things happen. Sometimes we're a little tighter than others, or something comes up. Sometimes people don't realize, or don't feel like groomers (in general) should get a tip. It irks me. I realize that a lot of us in this business rely on our tips, but I wish it wasn't so. I've had customers not want to book because they can't afford "my tip"! I always have to convince them I would rather their pet be happy and healthy than have an extra $5, $10 whatever in my pocket.

Anyways...rant over. I get tired of hearing how entitled my coworkers think they are sometimes.
There are 3 different kinds of people in this world: Dog people, cat people, and rational people who don't have a problem liking two things at the same time.

                            Mobile Groomer Comments

Well lets just say I have not been grooming all that long, but consider my work good for someone with less than a years experience. In fact I get lots of koodoos. When i was in grooming school I got tips. Loved them considering I was a student and wasn't expecting them. Lots of times they would pay for a night out at the movies, a dinner out by myself, gas for my car, or food through out the week. Not much but I welcomed it for a job well done.

Once I got out of school the tips dissappeared. I had sort of braced myself for this since I was mobile and I charge quite more than a salon. However here recently I have been on fire. I had one client that left me a 30 dollar tip, and and another that left me a 20 dollar tip. On top of that I have had several others leave a 5 dollar tips. I was floored to say the least.

I wouldn't expect it all the time. I know one of my clients owns not one buy many fast food franchises and while it may not show by her outward appearance I would guess they are probably a multi-millionaire, but I don't question what they do, I just do what is best for their pets and their family.

                            I feel blessed.

I've always gone by the motto "tips are never expected but always appreciated" and while we all may prefer the monetary tips, I get a better high off of being told "thank you; you've done a wonderful job and I'll be back".
My ex now works for a salon that pools the tips and they get divided.
