  • Gross injury on a dog today caused by neglect

I had a pup who is sweet as gold come in today I have not seen him since may. He had dreads!!! Ok no biggie loped the dreads off then put him in for a bath then dry. Put him up on the table and finish the haircut went to start clippin the nails and got to the back paw and WOW the toenail had grown into pad. But upon further and closer examination I notice the dogs nail had gone ALL THE WAY THROUGH and had popped out of the other side. I informed the owner who said she would take him to the vet. It was GROSS and I felt so bad for him cause he is so sweet and it looked like it was infected errrrr some people

Poor baby! At least you noticed and brought it to their attention. Let's just hope they take your advice and that this incident was out of ignorance rather than a routine of neglect. People can be totally oblivious at times.

That is just horrible and inescusable! The owner should have to live with something like that. Hope you keep a camera for justsuch cases, needs to be documented for future reference and to cover yoa!

I had an ingrown toenail once. Hurt like crazy and I eventually had to have it surgically repaired. I can't even imagine the pain that poor dog must've been suffering. Honestly, sometimes people just....suck.

I did take several pictures of the nail and he seemed to be in pain. Now the excuse to the bad condition of the dog was someone was taking care of him and they were sending money to have the dog groomed but the dog never came in. I have a sinking feeling they are going to try and pull that nail out themselves and I hope he bites the heck out of them!!!!!!

                  I had that happen once...

a chow came in - sob story - dad had been sick, his dog, left tied out during his illness and death, family forgot to do anything but feed and water, etc. He came to me on a Saturday evening and we have no emergency vets here. I happen to have a medicated spray that has lydicane (sp??) in it. I soaked that foot in it for a few minutes and then clipped the nail where I could see it and it slid right out (yes, it had come out the other side.) He never flinched! I'm all about not "practicing veterinary medicine" and I agree, but this dog would not have been seen by a vet, I am sure. I suggested a vet visit , but they refused until they decided where he would go. Made me so mad, but was glad I was able to help the guy!!!

When I was in school and waiting for its doors to open that morning I noticed this guy bringing in a Pekinese and the dog was not walking, but more like bunny hopping. I though the guy just had joint issues. Well I got this dog assigned to me as my first dog for the day. When I started the groom I noticed the problem. Every one of its nails had grown so long they were all curled under pushing into his pads. No wonder he was hopping it probably hurt like heck to walk. I made a note of it, bagged the toe nail clippings and had the owner of the school show them to the dogs owner and kindly explain that this damages the foot structure and hurts the dog. He got the message. He brought the dog back two weeks later just for a nail trim.

I think some people just dont get it, until you explain it to them.

I have had a couple like that, Cats and dogs. Pierced all the way through the pad.

I've experienced seeing the nail grow into the pad before, but not THROUGH the foot. Ouch, very sad. How did the owner not know that their dog was in pain a long time ago when the nail first started puncturing the flesh. You can tell a lot about people by how they treat those that can't talk.

Wow, never seen one go all the way through the pad. That is very sad. I hope they take the dog to a vet but doesn't sound like they're very responsible pet owners.
