i have finally gotten rid of a long time employee who i really didnt like and am about to start the hiring process again. i want a diff kind of groomer tho , someone who is just fabulous and nice and perfect! lol. anyone have any tips on how to find the right person??? any good questions to ask??? any tips on the interviewing process?? also my main problem i have is i am young. im only 24 and own my place soooo it been really hard to find someone who is okay with taking directions from someone younger than them. thanks.

Ryann, if you find that , PLEASE either clone them or ask them if they have a twin!
Seriously, you cannot find that in an employee very often. You have to find someone whos screw ups don't send you over the edge.
ALSO I rarly give direction to my employees other than, this one is next and the owner wants this......I let them do their own thing once they are trained in what I expect and how we do things here. It is the ONLY way to keep a groomer. I have found that I need to cover a few simple ground rules before anyone begins working with us here. Way to often, when I have hired a new person, they have 'habits' that have caused me trouble... ex; one groomer worked for someone who told them EVERY dog gets a completely clean sanitary.. no exceptions. Well, in my area here, I have got so many clients who 'found me' through word of mouth because I DONT shave everything BALD. I had not gone over every breed with this person... figured they knew what they were doing.. ended up getting calls for a week! Every Golden had been shaved from knees to ribs... I had to comp several grooms because of it.
second, I do let groomers use their 'style' until it comes to customer issues. One groomer used a 7 skip to drop down instead of scissoring.. again, had clients calling about the choppy look.
I find respecting my groomers is paramount, pay is important (it is in any job but when you are dealing with the 'creative' personality... money talks), I also have it in my "welcome to the shop" employee manual... I ask what breeds are you comfortable with/what breeds are you NOT comfortable with... it has been a good basis for trust going both ways.
