  • Bichons hair coming out in clumps!

Have you ever heard of this before and if so what is this condition called? I groom this little Bichon and every time i blow dry her face whether it's force or stand dryer it comes out with little or no force. And when i start scissoring her face i will hold her little chin hair to keep her still and it'll just come out in clumps then too. She barely has any fur left around her face and it only happens around her face. I've told her parents about it and they say she loses hair around they house too and that they have taken her to the vet about it but the vet has found no explanation. Have you?

Has the vet done a blood test on the dog to see if al the levels are normal. I am enclosing a link to health duisorder for the Bichon. http://www.bichonhealth.org/Health.asp Send it to the owners and they can learn to. Maybe the vet should be sent as link a lot of vets may not know what disorders a breed is prone to and not knowing means they don't know what to look for,

      Face/head area

The face is about the first place that a dog starting to get demodectic mange will start scratching. This mange gets hold when the dog has a compromised immune system - poor food, steroid shots due to being treated for allergies, even yearly vaccines can cause the immune system to be depressed.

The vet could take a scraping, but the dog could be just at the borderline of showing much. One thing I have done with Bichons like this is use a soothing medicated on their muzzles and cheeks if they are done quite regularly (at least monthly). This has helped. I am talking about something like OxyMed, or Show Seasons Soothe and nice ones like that, not tar or sulphur shampoos.

Oh so you have seen this. I just happen to have a gallon of soothe by show seasons. I will try this on her and i'm going to look at that link she gave me.

Not sure this is the same thing

I'm not sure the clumping loss that you describe is what I have seen, but I have certainly seen many scratch their faces and rip hair out.

If there are any actual sore/red spots, the owners could put Bactine on to relieve the itch. This is one of the things we used in Bichon rescue, and it is wonderful! However, if it is a borderline mange case, this may not help much.
