  • Behavior question

What does it mean when a dog is groaning? Not growling groaning it’s as if the dog is just complaining like a child. I don’t feel a since of fear when it happens. Today it happened with a 9 month old cocker puppy. He tried to show authority but I slowly convinced him otherwise. I kind of think he runs the family. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Very cute and smart.

Mine does that when she's complaining.

It depends on the sound of the groan. My male terv. is the biggest talker I have ever known. He has a happy groan/mumble when he sees a person he knows and likes (makes them want to come over and hug him), this is usually followed by his contented groan. He has a low groan/rumble of uncertainty when we meet someone new on the street until he knows their intentions. Last week when my female was in heat and I had to keep them seperated (want no puppies) he had a frustrated groan of wanting. Somedays he just "talks" all day long with a mixture of groans and whines.

        Usually

Yeah, I say it's usually "mumbling", kind of complaining, wishing they weren't having whatever is happening done to them.

        Otherwise I'd say it's discomfort/pain, but that's rarer.

There are as many different groans as their are emotions. Some are painful, some are boredom, some are happy. You kinda gotta pay attention to the body language that goes with it.

My white Bull Terrier used to lay her head on someone's knee, roll her eyes, and let out the most frightening symphony of sounds. A lot of people thought she was growling, but I knew...she was really purring, LOL.

I have a talker....he will groan as if to say "ok, alright, I'm not happy with this but I will wait if I have to, so hurry up."

I thought so… getting this behavior thing down has been fun and finding the difference between fear and awareness was the most important for me. The groaning was just a little different my dog grunts but that’s because she is older and has a little extra weight on her. (Just like her mom) LOL
