  • What kind of dog is this

This is Charlie, okay so we know he has Basset hound in him but nobody can figure out the other part(s), I personally think he has Shepherd in him, his coat was just like a Shepherd. He also stands like a Shepherd with his back legs/hock area bent kinda like. You know how a Shepherd stands, I'm sure there is a name for it but I don't know what it is. When the owner came back I mentioned it to her and she said that he is very smart, obedient,& protective too. He is a nice enough dog, but not overly friendly. Owner said he seemed to warm up to me very quickly, generally he is more reserved.

You can't tell his stance like I was describing in the pictures, but his stance is very much like a Shepherd. Another thing I noticed is when I put him in the kennel outside after he was done, he would pace much like a Shepherd.
    Any thoughts?

I couldn't shrink the after picture?? So there is only 1.

    I would say basset/airedale.

I so wish I had a picture of the basset/OES mixes that came in to the shop I used to work at. They looked just like OES with short legs, very cute, but every one of them was nuts for the nails.

I would say basset /terrier mix or even beagle terrier mix.

          Hmmm....

I don't see bassett at all - I see Shep/Terrier. I breed Sheps, the markings and torso are very Shep like, the legs and head are more terrier. That tail is all Shepherd!

When I first saw him I also thought Airedale. So I go along with what Maggy said.

I'm going to second the bassett/airedale guess. He's super cute. I groom a basset/goldenx and he's so lovable and affectionate, but OMG, what a bugger he is in the tub & table ! lol.

Honestly, I don't see Basset. The ears are too short and the bone is too slight for there to be much Basset in there. And Basset/shepherd wouldn't produce that hair on the face.

My guess would be Airedale/some short legged terrier like Cairn or Scotty.

                  HMMMM

I see Shep. markings and tail. Wiry facial hair and look is terrier all the way but with the dog being as small as it is (maybe deceiving based on the picture) I would think an Airedale/Shep mix would be bigger??

Some sort of small terrier/shep mix is my thought.

id say shep (he def. has the coloring of one and the tail gives it away lol!) but no basset...his hair looks almost wiry looking int he picture? no airedale in him though...id say some kind of terrier...maybe a wirehaired pointer or something similar to that breed?

No Airedale? Why would you say no Airedale? The color's right, and the tail is just exactly what an uncropped Airedale tail looks like. Add in a broad headed, short legged terrier...or maybe a Beagle that's acondroplasic (there are lots of them) and that's what you'd get.

He most definately has Bassett in him they know that one for sure because that is what mom is. It is the dad part that is the question. I thought Airdale too at first but, I'm not sure. I'm pretty convinced about the Shepherd part, but I agree there is definately terrier in there too, just not sure which terrier. Of course we will mever know for sure, but it is fun to try to figure it out.

They are smaller and have the same coloring as an airedale and as he does!
