I catch myself thinking it couldn't get worse, but as it will happen every time, it got worse. After a night that I maybe got 1 hour of sleep, due to horrible leg cramps, I was a little late to work. Then, I realized I was alone until late morning and had to answer phones, straighten out paperwork, look up several forms online and get them printed and in place, Check in early customers, set up new hire interviews and so on. After that was our Corporate visit and Of Course, they insisted I follow along, I still don't know why. Meanwhile, I've got 5 dogs waiting on me to be groomed and it's already almost noon. After the visit which was basically an excuse to pick my salon to pieces and gleefully point out all the things that need some attention, I finally get to begin grooming. I'm late with everyone and had to do the fastest grooms I've ever done and give discounts. I finally got everything done and packed up my stuff at a little after 6pm (I got to the salon at 6:45am) I am exhausted. We take our last appt.'s at 6pm, at 7:05pm a large man walks in and I ask if he needed help, He said he was there to get his dog groomed, I politely informed him of our last appt. time and apparently, that was his trigger words. This man started yelling and flailing about while my groomers and I looked from one another back to him in disbelief. I, not as politely, invited him to leave if he couldn't act respectfully. He thought that was a good idea, and left after telling me that I had a few serious character flaws, not in those words. I just turned and left the salon. I had had enough and he wasn't worth the effort. So now I know IT CAN ALWAYS GET WORSE!

Say these words to yourself: Tomorrow will be a better day!!!!
It seems like whenever I have a really bad day like you had it usually follows w/a really good day. I hope you got a good night's rest and feel better today. Do you eat bananna's, if so eat extra's and see if that helps w/the leg cramps. If you drink alcohol maybe have a single drink of your favorite beverage to help you relax. No more than one though, or it defeats the purpose and you will be hungover...lol
BTW if you work those hours all of the time you will burn yourself out!!! Good work ethic is one thing, insanity is another....lol.... Take a day or two off and do something YOU want to do that is not work related. I bet you feel MUCH better!!SheilaB from SC

Allison are you the manager of that salon? As such, couldn't you explained to the BigWigs that there are five grooms waiting on you? I would think that they could go through the salon, make a note of things that need to be changed and have you add dollars to their bottom line. This sounds like something they could have discussed with you after their findings. Meanwhile, were your clients upset that their pooches were there all day?
What a long day!

NOPE! If you are a groom manager, and Coporate is on an inspection, YOU are suppose to be there! They want your undivided attention. Through your management skills, you reassign the dogs to someone else, or a bather to have them ready for you, knowing that your morning is ka-put. Just make sure you have a plan B, then this won't happen.
I was a Petsmart groom manager 10 years ago, and yes, as manager you do have other duties, than just grooming, because that's only a "part" of what you do.

Allison, there is no amount of money that would get me to darken the door of a Petsomething as an employee again. Imagine your scenario-but there is no "offical" manager, and the employees are expected to run the shop, handle managment duties (without compensation) and deal with the minor-majior everyday disasters-without authority or the support of store managment!
It does sound like your managerial duties are eating up your time alloted for grooming. Is there anything you can delagate? Or allot a set amount of time at the end of each day/week/month to keep up with the paperwork?
I also just heard a rumor; are the coorps not taking matted grooms anymore? I was told that they are not due to liability issues. -just wondering-

My management duties didn't take all that long. Maybe half an hour a day, and an extra half hour for end of month paperwork. It just takes getting organized, prioritizing and delegating. I still had plenty of time to groom. In fact, the shop went from grossing $600 a week (1 groomer, 1 bather) to $3,000 a week (2 groomers, no bather) in just over a year. And $1,800 to $2,000 of that was from my work. So, you see, I did plenty of grooming.
Would I go back to work for the same Petsomething? You betcha. If they ever open a store in my area, I'll be the first one applying.
