  • Pricing Question Help!

    Hey All,

I have someone inquiring about prices. This guy only wants, nails, feet/face/tail and help with cleaning the ears. How should I go about pricing them? This is a newly rescued mini poodle too. 3rd/4th home owner says. Any help would be great. :-)

I might do the dog for no chrage, since I would HOPE he would book a full groom next time. HOWEVER he would hae to have the dog bathed and dried, and I could not clean ears as the only way I do those in in the tub.....I do charge a pittance, based on my hourly rate, for clients who want this, but they usually opt to get a bath too which raises it to half my groom price.

Sounds to me like 75% of a groom. feet/face/tail is the scary part. I guess this means no bath so that would mean your blades and scissors would be working on dirty hair - not good for your tools. I would encourage a full groom for this dog. That's what I would do. I bet the dog really needs it.

I would charge him full price for a miniature poodle because what he wants is almost a full hair cut. I would neaten up the body. Watch out because a "newly" rescued poodle will probably show up pelted. I have only two options to keep things simple. Bath only or full groom. Only difference between the two is the haircut. I use to try to be nice and give a break on price when they called for price wanting only a bath and the face trimmed. Then when the showed up they want feet and tail trimmed also.

$10 less than if you did a drop coat breed & $5 less for a poodle.

Why not just offer your bath and brush price and maybe he will take you up on it. Or, take your nail trim fee and triple or quadruple it : ) I mean, what amount would make it worth your time? What if the dog is super naughty and hard to handle? Why doesn't he want the rest of the groom? And what exactly is in that he wants done with the tail?? I wouldn't want to use my nice clippers and shears on dirty hair, so I don't know that I would offer to break it down that way.

I'd charge for a face, feet, tail which includes nails, pads, cleaning ears, sanitary trim, cleaning in front of the eyes, and sometimes rounding the feet.
I take $5.00 off the full groom price

I generally charge about $10 less than a full groom. I'm assuming you would include a bath with the tidy? If they don't want a bath, then I would only do the nails and ears and a small sani clip. For that service I charge my nail trim price plus $10. Even if it only takes you 5-10 minutes, there's still the time taken to put the dog you're working on away, clean the table before and after this one and dealing with the client.

Does he want a bath to go with this also? when it comes to pricing bath & brush is still considered a full grooming no different in pricing than a clippered cut.it still includes face,, feet, fanny ,sanitaries ,ears clean/plucked , nails clipped/filed, bath, brush and blow dry.. I do charge extra scissoring fee for any trims left longer than #4 blade as I do not own a #3 .I only discount if it is less than 4 weeks between appointments. My prices are based on 4 week scheduling.

Boo, did't you just start housecall?? Is the guy trying to talk you down on the price because he just wants a few things done??? I offer nails only for house call, but I charge a trip fee & x amount for each dog, other than that, I charge for a full groom. If he,s bring it to your shop you might go with a a la carte service similiar to the pet somethings. If I remember correctly, they charge x amount for each service,, nails, face, feet (and it adds up,,,lol)

It didn't occur to me the first time I read it that they didn't want a bath. In that case I would send them somewhere else personally. I don't groom dirty dogs, and that means my standard of clean not the customers. No exceptions.

After awhile when you start dealing with dirt and grime flinging into your face, salt and sand rattling around in your clipper, you either just offer $5-$10 less than your full groom, or you don't offer any special service like this.

Trying to shave out eye boogers, clingy poop, and salty pads is no fun for you, the dog, or your equipment.

                          Thank you!

Thank you everyone for the input. I asked the guy again about a bath and he then said, oh well yeah he needs one. lol Okay, so he is getting a bath with everything else, so basically a mini groom. I figured out what price I am going to do, and all. Thank you very much for the input! :-)

Here is another question. I am doing house call grooming, but how do you know you will be "safe" and all while doing it? Just something that has crossed my mind. <3

Yes, I did just start house call grooming. I don't know if he is trying to talk me down or not, I think he was letting me know he doesn't want a full Haircut. Just got word from him that he does want a bath, so I am saying he wants a mini groom. And that is the price I shall charge. :-)

How can you know? It's a stranger. If I got a random call, not a referral, from a man, I probably wouldn't take the appointment. Unless the wife was there. Too scary for me! Anyway, get some mace or pepper spray and be vigilant.
