  • Someone please tell me how

Someone please tell me how to live with myself after I take this stray dog to the pound. I have NEVER and swore that I would NEVER, but my back is against the wall. I can not keep her. I feel like I am going to hell for it, I guess I'm crazy but that is how I feel. How do I do this?,

I'm sorry you have to make that decision. It is hard and I don't think there is an easy way to reconcile yourself with what you need to do. The only thing I can think to tell you is to remember that it is better for her to be euthanized than to die a slow painful death out on the streets - hit by car, freezing to death, starving to death or if she survives, adding even more stray dogs to the world when she has one litter after another.

My heart goes out to you.

Are ther no non-kill ones in your area?

I hope some one on here has some alternative suggestions for you. Have you called any vets? No one wants the dog?

If you cannot keep this dog sending it to the shelter is more humane than just setting it outside.I don't know how the rescues there work there, but several of ours will frequent the pound and foster out these dogs before they get put down.I know its hard to do yes its heartbreaking, but unfortunately we can't save them all.. No matter how badly we want to.

Have you checked your vet's to see if anyone can take him?

I am so sorry. I can't say anything to make it alright,,but you know you are doing what you must, I am sure that you have exhausted all of your resources. Just by chance,,what kind of dog is it, and where are you at?

I wish I could help you. We sent one to the shelter on Monday. We found her Saturday night, and would have kept her a few more days except she wanted to eat my cats. It broke my heart to see her picture on their website the next day.
              BUT
She is a sweet dog, healthy and young and beautiful. She will find a home fast we hope.

                Blah - Dutch Shepherd Rescue??

If she looks possible Malinois mix, try the rarer rescues like Dutch Shepherd, Malinois and any others that there might be. The dog is young, and you are overwhelmed, so they may take her. I don't know where you are, but there is a Dutch Shepherd Rescue in Tn and maybe in Georgia...

I had to do it once. It was hard, but you have to understand especially if you are involved with rescue. You can't save them all. I know it is easy to say, but hard to understand sometimes. You did what you could to place her. Didn't you say she had issues?
I believe everything happens for a reason, we can't always understand why or what reason it is, but it is there. Maybe the someone will come into the shelter looking to adopt a christmas puppy, and you taking her there united them. Not to be morbid, but maybe you taking her in just gave her enough time and saved her from getting hit by a car and suffering. Maybe her time is up no matter what, and you just helped it to happen humanely. I am not trying to be mean, or cold, justt realistic.

The vets around here are no help at all. They won't even work with the human society.

She is a shephard mix. I can keep her till Monday, but that is all. She is very food aggressive, but firendly other wise. I am in NC in very rural area where people have the attitude that animals are expendable. I have tried the no kill shelters across 1/2 the state, they are all full.

I had to do it once myself. I let a groomer "friend" stay with me for a week. I woke up one moring and she was gone but her dog was still there! I expected a call saying something like "OMG I can't believe I forgot Sasha" but it never happened. After 3 weeks of trying to figure something out for this white german shepard and her attacking my two dogs I had to take her to the HS. I was THRILLED when a few weeks later a new client came in with their new adoptee to see it was Sasha! It made me sick to my stomach to have to do it, but I just had no other options. None of the rescues at the time had any room for her and I couldn't find anyone to even foster her. Thankfully there was a happy ending.

We cannot save them all. You've done what you can, let it go and don't feel guilty. Someone elses irresponsibility is not your responsibility.

That has become my mantra along with, I have enough of my own to care for, I cannot take on someone else's as well. STINKS though!

I agree. I've taken in two cats off the street, placed another w/ my mother and tried in vane (sp?) to get AC to enforce laws in my neighborhood. It's incredibly frustrating to watch the neighbor across the street let their (outdoor only) cat have litter after litter. All but one of my pets is spayed/neutered, none has ever been bred or will be, they are vetted, well fed, loved and well cared for. Sometimes you just have to be satisfied knowing you provide a good, loving home for your pets and aren't adding to the problem.
