  • Biting nasty lasha!

Or so the customer said, came into my NEW shop last week and booked an appointment. Said the lasha is 6yrs old and been around the block, the last was a mobile groomer in area who could'nt finish the groom and charged for a full groom.
I don't promise anything, bring dog in and I'll see what I can do.
Today lasha comes in, I booked at 12:00 so could have some one on one time, thinking the wost. Well, turns out she is just fine, typical lasha, don't like feet touched, don't like butt touched, but with groomers helper not even an issue!
Owners also gave her a tranq from vet because they were so worried.
She got a clean poo face and #7f all and looked clean and neat. I have much worse than this that comes to my shop.
Husband comes in to collect dog, first thing he does is call wife, he says you are going to love this groom, he does'nt believe it and she's not stressed and loves the groomer!
I don't get it, dog was fine, sometimes I wonder if owners create a problem? Glad to have new client but am dumbfounded again....

I'm sorry...I usually don't correct spelling, but it's lhasa. Lhasa apso. That was distracting me the whole time I was reading your post, haha.
There are 3 different kinds of people in this world: Dog people, cat people, and rational people who don't have a problem liking two things at the same time.

Some bad dogs are on their best behavior the first groom, and then, when you let your guard down, whammo. Please be cautious with this Lhasa as you progress with her. But, congratulations on a successful groom.

I don't even worry anymore when people tell me their dog is awful. 99% of the time the pet is fine. I find there are a lot of different personalities when it comes to groomers. I worked with one man, who I adore, fabulous groomer, but if a dog didn't sit perfectly still like he was made out of stone he would classify him as a hard to do dog. He was used to working on show dogs, and as most of us know, pets in a grooming salon aren't quite the same when it comes to grooming. LOL. He was still very good to the pets, but you could see him getting frustrated and I'd laugh at him. We are good enough friends I could bust on him and we'd laugh together. I'd hit a small snag in a dogs coat and say "oh, he's pelted!" just like he would and he'd laugh and say something smart alecky back because any smarl snarl was a "pelted" dog LOL. But dogs would also pick up on his stress. As good as he was to the dogs, they still knew he wasn't happy and would react to that. So dogs that would "act up" for him, would be perfectly fine for me. Also, I don't mind having a dog that moves a bit LOL. So when I hear that a dog has been kicked out of this salon or that for some reason I take it with a grain of salt and just see how it goes. I do a dog that would seize and try to bite the previous groomer with the owner standing right there. In the mobile I can do anything and everything with her that even her mom can't do without her even hinting at biting. I started a SCWT who at 5 months had been thrown out of his first salon and he was a challenge but after about 3 visits he would knock down the door to come jump on me and lick my face and I could do anything I wanted with him without a problem. I have so many like that where the owners are just stunned that I had no problems. I have a theory, and it could be total BS, but here it is. of all the groomers I have worked with, it's the type A personalities that tend to have the dogs act up more. These tend to be the groomers who push themselves, never relax, go go go, tend to book themselves pretty heavily and have a higher stress load. I've worked with many wonderful type A personality groomers. They always did more dogs than I did and seemed to handle the heavier load better than I would. but with the heavier bookings when a dog would act up and they knew how short on time they would be I could see them stress more which the dogs would react to. I also know some type A's who handle stress WAY better than I do LOL. I am SOOOO a type B. Very laid back, bordering on lazy. Only bordering because I fight my natural instict to be lazy tooth and nail! LOL. I don't get stressed easily if a dog is acting up. Actually, it takes a lot for a dog to really get me frustrated or stressed. I think that helps some of the really persnickety dogs out there. I would say about 75% of the dogs I do I have to work to keep awake in the mobile. I must be incredibly boring. I don't think being a type A or B makes you a better or worse groomer, just makes you approach things differently.
I took over for a groomer that had some very strict rules. If there was ANY matting on a dog when it walked in, it got shaved. The first 6-8 months I worked there i didn't do a single dog with a matt in it! Also, she would have the vet sedate dogs if they didn't want to sit still well. (After I took over I stopped sedating 90% of the pets that were sedated regularly for grooming) if an owner called to "check" on the pet and see what time to pick up, that pet was moved to the last of the day. It was her way of training her clients I guess. The first time I dematted a little mix that looked like a mini bearded collie (kept looking like a full coated beardie too) the owner brought me a bouquet of flowers, a card, and thanked me for not yelling at her! I was shocked as the dog had just gotten into some burrs and with some patience, brushed out pretty easily. So you never know what these other salons characterized as a hard to do pet! i guess that is the point I am trying to make. it's somewhere in there LOL

For me if an owner says oh they are the best dog nobody has ever had a problem with fluffy before I want to run. They are usually the nastiest, wiggliest little beast ever. Now if the owner says oh Fido doesn't like anybody or the last time he was at the groomers he bite or got kicked out I never seem to have a problem. I do approach the situation the same every time no matter what the owner tells me but it just goes to show you that owners only know what they want to know.

I agree w/ Diedre. Be careful in the future...cuz it sure sounds like you have a future client.
                  Good going!

Another note...back when I would do "tranqu'd" dogs, the drug of choice was Acepromazine, (by vet Rx of course).
                  I NEVER trusted the stuff.
A dog could seemingly be relaxed and fine...then BLAM...come at me w/ all the energy, teefs and focus of it's normal "nasty self".
I veiw Lopso-Apsos like Cousin IT disguising the Land Shark that lies beneath.

Actually, I might just switch to "Lasha" for the girl ones and "Lashim" for the boy ones...since I always have them lashoed to both of my grooming arms. Gives me a sporting chance of avoiding injury.
Often it's not what you say, but how you say it.

Worst bite I ever got was from a Lhasa. Years ago when I was a beginning groomer and was not being as cautious as I should have been- BAM!!! she nailed the $&^% out of me!!
Never trusted them since.....seems like most of them I have encountered are a little nasty tempered and sneaky about it...

I agree, keep one eye on the dog's behavior and one eye on the grooming and try it without tranqs next time if you want (I would).

I do NOT like ACE for naughty dogs either, it doesn't work, or it makes them worse. BUT, I have found that for the ultra hyper/stressed dogs that try to claw/eat their way out of your kennel/grooming loop/Groomers Helper tether, it works WONDERS. I have two dogs this way. It was like trying to shave a hummingbird's wing! Buuuuuzzzzz, constantly going 100mph. This just slows them down and mellows them. But for nasty dogs? NO.

Oh come on guys, you just need to understand Lhasa's. They are grumpy yes, but they take things very serious. I never have problems with any I do, and my Thor (my own Lhasa) as long as you aren't a noise, or someone at the door you are fine.
I never have had anyone else try and groom him though and I never would expect anyone to. If you don't "get him" than he can take advantage of you.
If you sweat the small stuff, all you have is small soggy stuff.....

Yee gads, never meant this thread as a Lhasa Apso (hope I spelled it right) bash! Me personally happen to LIKE THE BREED. I know, I know, all the stories, I'm a bit LOOOONNNGGG In The Tooth myself, but I've had good and bad with about most breeds! My thing was CUSTOMER said it was a demon and it was'nt.
I know about the 2nd time groom rule too. I have much worse poodles, shih tzues, poms, chow chows, labs, ect..., go down the list then this poor little gal. MAKES me wonder about customers, not groomers, not dogs.
And yes she was tranq'd, and I felt she did not need it. I will try next time without which is in 2 weeks, because they liked me and shop and put her on regular schedule.
I could be wrong but don't know till you try.
Bye the bye, I have a 1 1/2 year old lhasa pup Max, who is cuter than you know who, when his parents come to collect him he runs in the cages and doesn't want to go home. I've also had him at home to babysit. It's just one big day camp to him then back to boring old home. His owners were upset at first, never knew a dog who liked groomer/boarder better, but it's fun for him!
Now they can't wait to drop him off for a day off! Happy to have some that like being here instead of the ones whos owner DRAG them in (Ihave them also) not perfect.
Dogs are dogs what can you say,,,,,,,,,@^%&*&(*&(*&(&^&#!
I wish I could post Pics still cant other than [email protected]#$%^&*()_+|!
                              That makes 4sibes happy anyway....
