  • So are groomers wealthy?

My husband swears that Groomers must be Independently wealthy (lol), because in the last 2 weeks I have had two who are constantly late or don't even show up to work (due to partying the night before). No, they aren't friends they just act the same way. I have found this to be somewhat the norm' in our Industry. I have spoken to several friends who also own salons in the area and they have found the same. Is it our area or do we all have these issues?

If you know of any good people, please send them my way:-)

I know it happened in the first place I worked but I don't think it's the norm for the industry but it is the norm for those in their low 20's. We had two woman come in on a Saturday once that were out together the night before still drunk and dressed in last nights clothes.

    It's really annoying.

Unfortunately, I think those of us who are mostly stable ARE the exception. For whatever reason, grooming seems to attract flakes, drug addicts and weirdos. I've heard of groomers who just don't show up for work; I've seen a groomer just pack up and walk out in the middle of the day. Lots of hangovers from all night partying.... I don't know why but this profession just appeals to the kind of person with no work ethic.

I don't know if it is the norm, but get around a bunch of women who are working their hind ends off all day and see if a margarita doesn't sound good to them after a long day of dog wrestling. It is a common way to unwind after a stressful day in any industry. But no ones life outside of work should interfere with their work or ability to get there on time. That is just irresponsible and juvenile.

I guess it is the "norm" for any career. I worked in many different places and not just grooming it happens everywhere. If I were the employer I would give a warning then the boot. I have always taken responsability for whatever job I had. Now school that was another story lol

I have worked with all women in the same shop, and mostly under or around 20, and all are pretty responsible. I can really only think of two or three times someone has come in from a hangover, but it hasn't interfered with their work. I've only worked in this one shop, though, so I really don't know if this is the norm for the industry.

The job I was at previously to owning my salon, I was told I 'couldn't be a groomer' because I was on time for work!!

I would never stand for someone coming in still drunk or drinking on the job. No way, NOPE!

I am glad to know it is everywhere not just in Florida:-) But am sad that it happens. I know grooming attracts people from all walks of life due to the fact that it is a "trade" industry, but where in the WORLD HAVE THE WORK ETHICS GONE?

I had a groomer last year who I had to terminate (remember, my groomers are employees they are guaranteed a weekly salary or commission whichever is higher). She told me she wanted a weekend in November off (Our BUSIEST SEASON AND DAYS), I told her to put it in writing because vacation is done on a first come basis. TO MY FACE, she replied " fine then I will just call in sick and then you will still have to pay me".

same here in Ky. I think its because they are so in demand and can pretty much get a job anywhere they want..even next day. Plus, theres no investment much to learning right now, and that might have an effect on what types of people get in this line of work. Maybe if they had invested 10k for their education, they might not be so irresponsible. I had a groomer to pull that 2x's on me. One day came in at 11:30! warned her then...about 2 weeks later she didn't show up until 1, but called in with car trouble at 12. I had her tack box packed and on the porch when she arrived. end of the story! such a pain sometimes. But if you're lucky and you find one that is responsible, does a good job and the clients like them..better pay them well or they will be your next competition!!!

Are you ready for this? Both of these ladies attended the Florida Institute 900 hour program (a $10,000 course).

Stephen: Considering the cost of a college education even that amount is not much for a career that can pay much more than what many college grads will make. If you want to be wealthy, groomers can. I have a list of groomers that started with tiny salons and invested profit in real estate, sometimes homes, sometimes their business' building, and yes, there are several millionaire groomers out there that I know, and probably more. It's a matter of motivation, ANYONE can do it, ANYONE. It's a choice.

I see a lot of that in this industry as well. It really is horrifying. One of my friends knows a groomer in a nearby city who smokes marijuana and is into drugs and her employer knows about it and JOKES with her about it "just as long as she didn't come to work high"! I agree with the above posters, it's so hard to find clean, reliable people to work for you, you have to hold on to them. I've been my bosses only employee for two years now, we've tried people but something is always wrong it seems. Timeliness, drugs, something!

I think being more concerned with partying and friends than your job is an age thing. A lot of people my age (early to mid 20's) are still immature, like teenagers with responsibilities. lol I don't think its an industry thing at all. This is how I was able to break my lease, I would be going to bed at 11 right when my roommates came home ready to drink and play board games drunk, one of their drunk friends came in my room and thank goodness he didn't try anything, but I told the landlord I had had it!

Maggy you are right, I've seen it in most every industry I've been in. It just horrifies me more because instead of selling someone clothes we are working with their (fur)kids! I can't imagine getting near an animal with scissors high or drunk.

Syphol, I agree with you:-) That is why all of my employees have to sign the rights to a drug test and I have to send them for random drug tests (my Workers Comp policy requires it).

In California they teach dog grooming at the womans prison. And if you think about it this is a good career choice for flakes. No background checks, no drug screening. By the way how do some of you shop owners check out the groomers you hire?
