I have a owner with a Akita that is 10 years old, and she wants me to find the dog a new owner. get this becuase she wants a cat and all the rescue groups wont give her one because she has this akita. I told her she shouldnt have gotton the dog if she was going to give it up. I work with a rescue group and some people just dont understand what it takes to take good care of a dog. I know I could never give my dogs up just to get a cat. We had a lady call last week that had a big dog and wanted to bring the dog in because she just had a baby, she the owner thinks the dog is going to attack the kid because when the dog and the kid are in the same room the dog just lays down and looks at the kid. I couldnt belive it. I think people just dont know that dogs live long. sorry this is soo long but this is why we have soo many unwanted dogs.

I know someone who got rid of her 2 cats because she was afraid they would jump in the crip in the middle of the night and smother the baby because it smelled like milk. Such an old wives tale. Here is a simple solution. Close the door so the cats can't get in the room.If your dog is fat, you are not getting enough exercise!

I use to groom a little dog that was given up when the owner had a baby. Said she couldn't possibly take care of a baby and a dog at the same time! When she stopped in to tell me, I must have looked at her like she was crazy because at the time I owned a grooming shop and had 2 very small children and 5 dogs! She didn't even work outside the home! Some people!

If you ever browse the pets section of craigslist, its all postings of people giving up their dog because of every reason under the sun.
You can tell they just want to get rid of it when the same person gives you 5 excuses. "Um, we're moving, just had a baby, the wife has allergies, I got a promotion and have no time anymore, and the dog has a slight bathroom problem which is definitely NOT the reason we're giving him up, we love him dearly after all."
She's going to be disappointed, assuming she's honest. Don't the rescue groups usually have you list every pet you've owned in the last X years, whether or not you have them, and why not if you don't?

This is a true story! I used to do "make overs" for dogs at the animal shelter to get them adopted faster. One day a lady came in to "drop off" her 11 year old black labx, the reason, she replaced all her carpeting with white carpeting and she can see the dog hair on the new carpeting!! On her way out she inquired about a white sheppard in the shelter!!!!!!! Nuts!!!!!!!!

Years ago I went to the shelter to adopt a dog. Found a beautiful 18 month old purebred Great Dane. She was at the small size of the standard for bitches. The reason given for why she was given up was (get this) "she got too big)! It's a freakin Great Dane!! I adopted her and other than I couldn't keep her off the furniture, she was great. I just covered the furniture with sheets when I wasn't home.Lisa VanVleet, RVT

When we used to have just our dogs we lived in numerous apartments. We had turned down so mnay beautiful places we could have lived and had to choose more expensive places because we had dogs. I never would have considered giving them, guess what I had two dogs and then had a baby, then added another dog and now ANOTHER baby, I still have 3 dogs and I will add to the four legged crew and if Dh has his way more two legged...I get blown away when people complain and say they had a baby and now spend no time with the dog...BS!!!
I agree there are RARE circumstances that rehoming is the best option but would you not look for the best home possible? I don't know how people can sleep at night...

how mean. akitas get so attatched to their families, poor thing will have a broken hearti hope the owner knows that no cat can compare to an akita! i also dont see why the rescues wont let the owner have a cat. akitas and cats can get along fine. do they think its going to rip the cat to shreds to second it sees it?

I think people get bored w/their animals and since they are disposable (they're only dogs and cats after all) they are easy to get rid of and replace w/a newer model. What is wrong with this? GRRRRRRRRR
I see this all the time and it gets my blood pressure up!!! As far as the "I had a baby story"? Give that sh*t up because nobody w/a brain or a beloved pet will believe that crock of bull!!! If you make your dogs a PART of the family instead of a hobby or occasional distraction there should be no problem bringing home babies!SheilaB from SC

So Frustrating....
It's so hard for me to understand people can do this. They just toss a member of the family aside because they're bored and want something different. That's what it amounts to.
I had 4 dogs including one with behavioral issues when my daughter was born. Plus I worked full-time and was going to school. If anything, I spent more time with my pups on my maternity leave so they wouldn't feel neglected or jealous when my daughter was born. I worked with behaviorists and trainers on methods to introduce them all and it could not have gone more smoothly.
My daughter was the queen and the pups were her four legged siblings. Wherever me and the baby went the pups were there. Nighttime feedings, the one with issues was at my feet sleeping. It's just so sad, and an Akita at that. Like Kybert said, they have such an attachment to their family. I can only hope the Akita can recover if rehomed.

I'm surprised that the agencies won't adopt a cat to her even with the Akita. My friend adopted a cat a couple months ago, and she had four dogs, and one was even known to be animal aggressive. I wonder if it's really just an excuse to get rid of the dog...Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job. ~Franklin P. Jones

It's totally heartless to give up your dog in their senior years! It makes me sad & disgusted at the same time. There's so few good excuses for this, but too many lame ones. When I was working at a petsomething this lady came in with an old MalteseX and wanted to find her a home because she'd bought a new leather couch. It was very expensive and she didn't want her nails to scratch it. I must've looked at her like she was pig poo because she didn't say anything else past that point. Actually I was thinking she was a heartless B***h.
