  • And people say pit bulls are vicious!

I got my first bad bite today by a big, fat, matted to all heck Golden! I got him on the table with little effort and with the first brush stroke I hit a tangle and WHAM! He got my whole hand in his mouth and the brush too! It was so fast and not expected at all. Luckily the brush got most of the bite but by the time he let go, he had put his teeth straight through my nail bed! It hurt sooo bad, and blood was everywhere. Of course it was my right so now I can't even use my scissors unless I put my all the way through the hole, which doesn't really work. I'm probley going to loose the nail. Its all kinds of crazy colors. What a day!
I do lots of pit bull mixes and they are some of the best dogs to groom IMO. Of couse I think that because I have two myself. He he. I guess the moral of the story is DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!!

    You got that right

I used to say that about toy poodles too. give me a pitbull anyday. I had so many of those tried to eat me alive and everyone else was afraid of the pits. I said I'll take those anyday.

Pits are some of the best dogs I do, must of the time their tails never stop wagging. Now huskys on the other hand I can't stand, I got nailed in the head by one. Not sure how it happened but it sure hurt like heck.
Never gonna know if you never even try

Be real careful to watch for infection. That's a bad place to get nailed (no pun intended) and can get bad fast.

Soak your hand in Epsom Salts/hot water for 20 minutes at least once a day. It will help to ease soreness and draw out the "boogers" that cause trouble. If you notice excessive swelling or fever, get thee to the dr.

Its funny and sad at the same time. Whenever I get a call from a persona with a pitt or similiar dog, they always go out of my way to tell me that its a really good dog and she's never hurt anyone and its a big baby. I always have to reasure them that I am not afraid of doing their dog and that I have never, in my 5 years of grooming had any problems with them.

The worst bite that I ever saw was from a golden retriever. He (actually it may have been a she)bit another groomer in the shop doing the same thing (brushing out a mat), and not once, but twice and tried again. It just kept going at the groomer.

I imagine that you are quite in pain. Be sure to take care of that hand. What did the owner say about the bite?
don't find yourself up a creek without a poodle.

I agree-don't judge a dog by it's breed; you may be in for a nasty surprise. The 2 worst bites I ever got were from a Lab( bit me on the face), and a Pug (savaged my hand quite nicely). The Poms I get in seem to be the most likely to snap, though.

Speaking of Poms, my instructor today asked me whether I wanted the lab or the Pom. Me being a newbie said, "Oh I've never done a Pom, let me take the Pom, she is sooo cutteee!"

Well everything was going fine until I went for the feet, thank god I had the Groomers Helper, or my hand would have been lunch for this cuteeee Pommmm!

I know have added Poms to my beware list, oh and I had a psycho husky as well today....to the list they go too!

Soft-coated Wheaten nailed me good one time. He actually was trying to bite the HV dryer and my hand got in the way.

Bullylover, take care of that hand! Dirty matted to the bone dog=bad bacteria.
In 22 years of grooming, I've never had a bad pitbull or pitbull type dog. I absolutely love them.

I've never had a pit bull so much as raise a lip. I've had a couple of bites from schnauzers, a couple from boarder collies, The worst bites were from a little mixed breed hound. Bit my face, had me down and chewed me up real good. My own bull terrier got my , but it wasn't intentional. We were playing with a toy and she got me by mistake. And I can't count the number of bites I've gotten from cockers. But never a pit.

The worst bite I got was from a bichon, there's still a scar on my and a bump in my nail from it, even though the nail has grown out completely from where he got me.

I've never had a golden even show his teeth. I've only done a couple pitts but no problem with them either. I do have two aussies that are problematic. Both have attempted to get me and one was successful. It wasn't too bad. I tried to put a muzzle on him to finish him and that really pissed him off. I still do him but when he says he's done, well, he's done. He occassionally goes home with only some nails clipped and rarely gets his pads and feet trimmed. The other one has never managed to get me and wears the 'party hat' without complaint.

                            Vicious Dogs

I would add American Eskimos to the list. I can't remember a single one that didn't try to bite. On anything not just mats. Worst bite shepardxcorgi got me on the wrist and punctured the vein. bruised from my hand to the middle of my arm real purty. I was holding him by his collar and he somehow managed to turn in the collar and got ahold of my wrist "ouch"

I haven't had any bad pits. I just think that pits get such a bad rap because if they do bite, its usually bad.

But the worst bite I ever had was a 3.5 pound chihuahua. That dog bit the heck out of me. Of course her name was Angel. Angel was a devil
