  • Walmart fabric

I was talking to an employee at my local Walmart about them discontinuing fabric. She said that they weren't eliminating it completely, but instead of buying it by the yard off the bolt it will come prepackaged. She said it's like how they used to offer such things as trims and velcro that you could purchase by the foot, but now come in a package. I can't really picture the fabric being sold this way, but that's what she said. She also said the price might be about the same, in the velcro example it actually is cheaper to buy the packaged stuff, of course you have to buy the amount in the package whether you need that much or not. Just wanted to share.

That might not apply to all Walmarts though, the one I work at in Rhode Island isnt planning any changes to our fabrics deparment. Sometimes Walmart "field" tests new ideas in a few stores to see if it works or not. So if it does change, it may not last that long. I know we have tried a few things and it went away after a few weeks, so I don't know if the change will be permanant or not. When I go back to work on wed ill ask the day staff ( i work 3rd shift) and see if anything is going on around here.

That's interesting. I can't imagine buying a whole bolt of fabric, but how do they do the whole packaging thing? What if I need to make a pair of Pajamas and the "packaged" fabric isn't enough? It's not like I can have jammies with only ONE pant leg, lol, but I also can't take another package and sew on the other leg!

I was buying fabric from Wal*Mart yesterday and I asked if they were closing their fabric dept. and she said, "Only the ones that are not doing so well." The one I went to apparently does well because I had to WAIT IN LINE for a while to get my fabric cut!

She said it would be packaged in amounts such as '3 yards' '5 yards' etc., not by the whole bolt. If they do it that way, and the price doesn't increase, it will work fine for us. Not so great for regular sewing I guess. She said it was because they were having problems with fabric suppliers providing bolts with damaged goods, like they'd start to measure a piece and come across fabric that was sewn together or in split up pieces. This was in one Walmart, the gal in the other Walmart told me that they are keeping their fabric department, the gal in the first Walmart told me that the gal in the second Walmart was misinformed, LOL!!!!!!! Who knows? Guess we'll just wait and see!!!!

When I talked to an employee there she told me some Wal-marts may still carry fabrics but she wasn't sure which ones, just that our local one wouldn't have any. We do several dogs of WM employees so they keep us posted. We may be making a mad dash for fabric right before they go out.
