How many require shots?

I am mobile but I wanted to ask all of you. How many require proof of shots? Do you mobiles? I have not. Some people tell me the dog is up on them. In all my years it has never been a problem. The dog Ruby who is passing on P- due to not up on shots...is ok..I doubt she would bite me...I remember her, not like an unknown dog.

I require rabies vac (or titers), for my own safety...or rather, I don't want to risk having to get those awful shots if I do get bitten by an unvaccinated dog.

I would require Rabies vaccine at least for the dogs safety. If a dog bit you and was reported for it (Drs are required to report) the dog without a rabies vaccine can be taken away from the owner for quarentine. I would not want to be responsible for that. Not to mention you could have to go through the rabies series which is not fun. The rest are up to you being mobil they arnt really coming into contact with one another.

We do where I work, but we are an animal hospital.

If I were to open my own shop, I would still require them. I have been able to weed out the once-a-year clients who are often cheapos and don't want to get their dogs vaccinated, muchless groomed.

The rabies is an obvious one if you ask me, the others are just a good idea in general, just my opinion.

I don't know about all states, but I've been bitten several times by dogs that were not current on their rabies vaccinations and not once have I ever been required (or even had it suggested) to start the series of rabies shots for myself. The one and only time I ever had to take the first shot (but didn't have to complete the series) was because of a cat in the vet hospital that was exhibiting neurological symptoms consistent with rabies, and I'd had my finger in her mouth to administer medications. When she died overnight we had to take the first shot while we waited on test results. When it was determined that she did not have rabies we didn't have to complete the series.

I was told that one did not have to take the shots unless the animal was showing signs of rabies, or showing neurological symptoms, during the period of quarantine.

That said, I still require an up to date rabies vaccination, simply because it's the law that dogs have to have them. If they don't, and you get bit, the owner has to pay to quarantine the dog, and will probably be fined. We also require the distemper series because in this state it's also required if the dog is in a boarding facility.

We require rabies at the least

On adult dogs we require rabies at the minimum and puppies have to have parvo/distemper etc. We don't require proof but they do have give the vet name to us so we can verify if necessary. The problem we run into is that a lot of dogs we get especially in spring people want to clean them up before taking them to the vet so the vet doesn't thing they aren't taking care of their dog. (At least that's our take on it). So our opinion of them is less than the vet? Oh well, some of the matted messes we get I certainly wouldn't want to take them anywhere and be seen with them either. We explain that any dog that is not vaccinated and bites us WILL be turned over to animal control for quarentine or testing. No exceptions and of course they start explaining how sweet their dog is and how it would NEVER bite anyone. Suuuurrre.

We require rabies, and not just them saying that it's up to date, we have to see the papers.

i will require physical proof of rabies on cats. will take their word on it on the dogs. a lot of my referrals comes from my local vets, so i know those dogs are current. another reason i am lax is because it it a requirement to have a current rabies when licensing the dog. if a dog is sporting a current tag, then i assume it's current on the rabies.

no rabies paper proof no groom for them tags dont work for proof either since it doesnt take much effort to swap those... some people get very irate and i've been called many a things because of this but rules are rules.. i was bit by a cat who had its shots and that was hell enough. tetanus antibiotic shot pills oh yeah SEVERE PAIN!!! of course it got my right hand yep so missed work the next day too because my hand was so swelled i couldnt hold shears.. and since the rabies was given less that a month before the county still went to see the family. so theres no way i will do it without the shot proof

well...i can tell you that my cat is about 9 yrs old and had one rabies shot since we've had him...that was because he was being boarded. we dont really vaccinate our cats against anything as they are STRICTLY indoor only cats! they do NOT go outside UNLESS we are standing RIGHT there. they also dont go anywhere...maybe the petstore (fiance's cats) but other than that...nope. now i can understand if your cat goes outside or to the groomers often enough for it to be required..but i just dont see the point in giving a rabies shot to a cat that dosnt go anywhere. thats just my opionin on it.

ps. but if i was grooming a cat i WOULD ask for PROOF on paper of a rabies shot. but lo and behold the last place i worked for...she didnt require ANYTHING when grooming a cat! we had one old cat lady who had 3 or 4 cats...one was indoor only, one was a siamese she rescued that was on her enclosed front porch and two were indoor/outdoor cats and they ALL had fleas. and yes the male in/ou cat was a NASTY NASTY bugger...ive been ALMOST bitten by many cats...thankfully i havent been because...i have no health insurance! yep woulda loved to pay for THAT one! NOT!

I've know people who feel the same way about vaccinating their indoor cats for rabies. At least one of them changed her mind when she came home and found her cat eating a dead bat that had gotten into the house. I now it's not a common thing to happen, but it's not rare, either.

And as far as you being bitten by any animal whily you are working as an employee; you don't need health insurance. It's covered by work comp. You don't have to pay for anything. Work comp coveres the whole shebang. They also cover lost wages, but not at 100%. I'm also in Illinois, and they pay 2/3 of your wages. I just went through this last summer, and I'm sure nothing has changed significantly since then.

I have four cats that are all STRICTLY indoor. They dont go outside whether Im supervising or not. There are too many factors outside that I cant count on. Every cat gets rabies shots. Not only is it the safest thing, but groomers/kennels require it. All cats/dogs are required to have proof of rabies in my salon, including my cats. When moving to VA, I had to board all four of my cats in a kennel for a couple of days while I moved all my stuff in. The kennel required proof of shots and I only had 3 out of 4! No amount of begging made them change their mind. We couldnt call the vet because it was a Sunday. Thankfully, they let me fax it in on Monday. I am forever in their debt.
