      I usually cut it off.

The groomers fix is either to leave it or clip it off depending on how much you have to take off. To get rid of it completely the owner needs to make sure there are not medical problems (diet, bulgy eyes, etc.) and then they can go from there by way of stain removers. I personally recommend angela glow and have had 3 of my customers use it with amazing results. No staining at all. It is pricey though.

I just cut it off. I try to tell people the causes of it too. Minerals in the water and food, also a high body ph can cause it. Nothing can be done on that.

            Stains?

You mean stains?Black confused me,as they are rusty red. Snip with small scissors. sometimes thininng shears are best. Vaseline applied by owner daily repels stains,so they say.AS Helly said, sometimes changing dog food helps .Perfumey shampoos can cause allergies and runny eyes. Aren't you gald humans don't get all tis stuff. Warts and stains under eyes, hot spots, fleas. They deserve to be spoiled with all they have to deal with. Innocent fellas such as they are.

Are you talking about tear stains??? If so, I have never heard of any product that will remove them completly. If it won't screw up the look of the face, I cut them out with my thinners as best as possible.

it's caused by the eyes tearing. tearing as in crying not ripping. there are products on the market, but i've found the best way is to have the owner wash it daily with a warm cloth. good luck in getting most owners to do that.

That's tear staining. And it's usually caused by yeast. There's not a lot we groomers can do, short of cutting it off.

The problem needs to be addressed at the root...why are the dog's eyes tearing so much? Allergies, blocked tear ducts or ducts that are too small, irritation from extra eyelashes growing inside the lids?

If the problem is something that can't really be fixed (like narrow ducts), then the owner needs to address the yeast growth. And there are tons of ways to do that. Not all of them work for every dog. But a few suggestions; give the dog bottled water with a little lemon juice or vinegar added. Change foods, and eliminate ingredients like beet pulp or red food dyes. Give the dog the Tums treatment; check with a vet for dosage.

There are also oral medications that will take care of the staining. And yes, they work very well. But it means putting the dog on long term, low dose antibiotics. And, IMO, using antibiotics for a purely cosmetic condition is a bad idea.

Are you talking about dirt, or hair coloring or what?

If it's not supposed to be clipped underneath the eye, and it's dirt or something, I wash it off.

                      Sorry folks!

Sorry about that. It is tear stains. I don't know why I confused you all with this as I know it is tear stains. Brain fart I guess, ha!

I have heard that sometimes changing water from tap to bottled or vice a versa can help. There is also a show dog trick (if it your own) I can’t quite remember if it is Alka-Seltzer or something like that. You would have to ask a show person. A Chow breeder told me about it. Never tried it=too nervous

I thin out what I can, like others said. But to get rid of the stains, I'd suggest Angel's Glow. It's the low dose antibiotics that Helly was talking about. I have a bunch of customers that love it.

If possible I trim out as much as I can. Not much we can do about it. Helly and the others have given some great info about it.

I've heard Tums can do it.
