  • a new low

i almost made it through the whole day without another client showing they can still get lower. i had about 30 minutes before i was closing up the phone rang and i answered thinking it would be someone wanting a morning appt. a gentleman(or so i thought) was insisting that he must have a groom immediately and began to explain that this was his wifes dog and he was supposed to be taking care of it while she was in iraq. his problem was that he hadn't been caring for the dog as he was instructed and now the dog had feces matted in its coat. i thought he was telling me of something that occurred today. i told him to wait until tomorrow morning then relented to removing the mess until he could bring the dog in for complete grooming. he showed up dragging a full coated lhasa apso that smelled so bad i gagged. i closed my mouth and put the poor matted baby on my table and lifted her tail to the worst mess i've seen in a long time. i didn't even make the first pass when i saw the burned almost bloody back end and stopped. i told him to take his dog to the vet for treatment and let them remove the mess to prevent further damage. he freely admitted that when his wife called home he told her of the situation and she was distraught, hows that for a valentines day

I really hope he took that baby straight to the vets! Very nice the way he cared for his wifes dog while she is serving our country (I assume she is a soldier). Hope they don't have kids that he was supposed to "care" for!

Oh how sad for that poor dog. Imagine the pain he must be experiencing.....how long that dog must have been in bad condition. To top it of, that man's wife was in Iraq? In my opinion that man should have gone out of his way to go above and beyond in taking care of that dog. Was taking care of her dog too much to ask? Apparently her risking her life wasn't worth keeping her dog safe and clean.

Nice. Guess what he's NOT getting for Valentines day!

Hopefully he did as you said and got the dog (or will get the dog) to a vet. Poor baby. Full coated? OH MY GOSH, his wife WILL die!

            Was he at least embarassed?

Do you think the man learned his lesson, once you pointed out just how bad the poo and rear end situation was. I've had a couple of people who bring in dogs with bad poo butt but usually a day or so after it occurs. I usually get them all wet and continue to soak the area real well and soap it up with something mild and let it sit a while and it usually softens it up. I clean it off in sort of layers gently. I have had where they were very red, cracked and dry around the anus afterwards and tell them to make sure and put at least some vaseline on the area when they get home and keep an eye on it and if it worsens to get it to the vet. I never try to shave through that kind of dried, caked poo mess always wash first. I find the same thing with eye crust if you try to shave the dry stuff before a bath sometimes that area of the eye will bleed.

Boy, we see it all don't we? It makes you wonder how someone can be so careless with a live being! I've seen some pretty bad stuff over the years too, but the worst was when a guy brought in his mothers cat (he said over the phone that the cat had a few mats) this poor thing was so matted and soiled itself that it had maggots coming out of hole they made by the back end! Thank God I was working for a vet, they sent over a couple of techs to help kill the magots and clean out the hole as I finished shaving the poor thing. I ended up reporting the people for neglect; I told the guy I had to report it. I even tried to get the guy to let me keep the cat so I could get the proper medical attention to it. To no avail, he said his mother wouldn't go for that. I told him if he didn't get this cat back into the vet for attention it probably would die. I don't know what ever happened but I was so upset! It's a good thing I didn't see the mother cause I would of torn her to shreds with words! Boy when I see how some people treat their pets, I look at my own and tell them how lucky and spoiled they are!

That is very very sad for the dog. If anyone who was supossed to be caring for my dogs let them get anywhere remotely like that I would be raging and they would be completely out of my life after I let them have it!

that is awful!! why do people do that to the dogs? and why is he all of a sudden worried about it? That is the last thing his wife needs to be worried about right now, IMO. She is fighting, and he cant even take care of the dog. grrrr....

Did he take it to the vet? Were you able to get some of the hair off?

I remember a little Yorkie that had such a bad fecal mat she could no longer defecate....until we removed it. I didn't think that poor dog would ever quit pooping. And I also remember an Irish Wolfhound with millions of maggots, starting behind his ears, and continuing all the way down his back and under his tail. The stench was just about the worst thing I've ever smelled. It's something I'll never forget.

Now, should Wife divorce Hubby? Naaa. I wouldn't. I'd make him wear a dirty diaper until my dog was all healed up, and the coat completely grown back. And I'd make him live in a tent for the entire time, too. I wouldn't want to live with his stench.

I'd follow up with a call

I wouldn't be able to help myself, I'd call the next day to "just check on how the appt. went" just to be sure that he took him.
