  • What breed haven't you groomed?

There are a few breeds that I have my eye on that I am just hoping I get the call for some day. I have yet to groom a SCWT, Beddlington, and a dandie.

    Whats your list?

I would like to groom one of the corded coat breeds of dogs. So far I have not had any experience with them. I would also like to start doing some creative poodle designs.

I live in South Florida so it is rare I see the big hairy dogs. So I have yet to groom a Newfie or a Great Pyrenees- but I am hoping someone from the North will come in with one. It would be easier to make a list of dogs that I do groom- it will be shorter: Shih-Tzu's, Lhasa's, Schnauzer's, Labs, Goldens, Toy Poodles, Westies, Yorkies, Malteste's. People here seem to get into the small dogs. I do have a guy that moved from Alaska and he has 3 Huskies that were sled dogs that I bath and brush and brush and brush. They are ALOT bigger then the Huskies people obtain down here from breeders.

I haven't done a dandie or a cesky terrier yet; have only seen the occasional cesky at the shows, but would like to do one someday. I know there are a few more, but I just woke up and these are the 2 I thought of!

A Sealyham is tops on my list.... I had two Bedlingtons at the old animal hospital, and I'm REALLY surprised I didn't get a response on the letter I sent to their owner when I moved. I was the ONLY groomer (she'd tried 4-5 over the years) who did her dogs right....

I did a Dandie ONCE years ago, but since I'd only been grooming a short time, I'm sure it wasn't a good job.... I used to do a poodle/dachshund mix in a Dandie clip, and she looked adorable!

With some of the work I've seen on more commonly-seen (Bichons, Yorkies, Schnauzers) breeds whose owners have tracked me down, I HIGHLY doubt my replacements (yes, they had to get TWO groomers to do the amount of work I did there) could even come close to getting the grooms right.

Crystal, the wheaten jams up the clipper blades, bedlington is very challenging, and the Dandie can mat faster than anythig--I own 2 of them. The picture by my name is Chloe, daughter of my Becca. Dandies are on the endangered breed list, so you probably won't be seeing many. The club is trying to get the numbers up.

I don't know if there is any particular breed that I'd like to do that I haven't. I still get the greatest satisfaction out of those once a year shavedowns!

There's a few I haven't groomed. Some I don't want to, like the corded breeds. Yeah, I've had the chance to, but turned them down. Where I worked, there wasn't the right equipment for them.

Most of the ones that have been posted that have want to be groomed I've done. I've done the Afghan, loved grooming that dog. I've groomed a Saluki, Borzoi, Bearded, Powderpuff, Afghan, Kralean Bear Dog (sp?), Bouvier, Kerry Blue. When I was in New York I got to do all the dogs that you hardly see outside of shows.

I want to do a Bedlington most of all. My boss that taught me to groom did one till it died. She was the only one who did is haircut right. She didn't even know how to do the cut, she just looked at a picture and did it. The owner loved it and kept coming back to her.

I'm sure there are quite a few that I havent groomed, or even seen. Off hand all I can think of are Kerry Blues, PBGV's, Clumber Spaniels and Otterhounds.

well....my boss has seen someone grooming a komondor (she says she DEFINATLY doesnt want to groom one of those...and i really dont want to bathe one either! can you imagine not getting those cords completely dry and the cords getting moldy and having to start over? im sure the owner will be HIGHLY po'd LOL!), we do a bouvier, a PBGV (this dog is such a crybaby and a brat), wheatens, pyrs, bernies, hm...a portie we do also. thats all that i can think of off the top of my head.

Heavens there are just toooooo many that I haven't done. I know I wouldn't want to do any of the corded breeds, have no idea where to even start on them. If I were into grooming big dogs I'd would like to do that black and tan mountain dog (can't think of its name).
I learned to groom on Afghans, Borzois love those breeds. Haven't seen those breeds in years, only on TV. I really like to do long flowing coats.
Never have done a Portugese Waterdog, or a Saluki. I would like to do a Dandie, seen them but never have done one. Just too many, can't think of them all.

do you really want to try corded??

We actually have a corded Puli (about 30 lbs) and a corded Bergamasco (about 70 lbs). Neither has hair to the floor yet (thank goodness!) The only tools you need to groom them are your hands and LOTS of time, and a hell of a lot of cool air dryers. And clippers to clip their pads. I spend 30-50 minutes in the tub bathing them (30-puli, 50-bergamasco) and squishing all their cords and pulling all the twigs and leaves out...fun fun fun, all day letting them air dry, put them on the table to stand dry them a bit and pull all their cords. The Bergamasco now spends an overnight trip because the people say he doesn't always get completely dried, so we dry him some more on day 2.
So unless you have a full day or 2 of free time, I don't really recommend them as an exciting breed to try out. The Puli maybe, but nothing bigger. They're both sweet dogs, but verrrrry time consuming and achy on the arms (squishing the soap in and out of all their cords).

I've also got a few Clumbers I do. LOVE THEM!
Bascically what everyone else has said. Haven't tried a Dandie, Bedlington. I wouldn't mind seeing an Irish Wolfhound, but I'd looove to see our crew of girls try and fit one in the tub! We usually end up doing the Eng. Mastiffs out in the kennel with buckets of warm water and soap.
