  • question about grooming a brussel griffon

I had a question how do u groom the heads on the brussel griffon. do u shave it? or do u just trim it? I know u shave the ears, I have a 5 month old coming in and not sure how to do the head. do u shave to body like ur doing a cocker. THis is if she wants me to do him like the breed is to look like.

I use a 3 skip blade on the body and a 4f or 5f on the head. The hardest part to get right is those eyebrows, but I had a client who was a former breeder of brussels help me until I got it perfect. Just let your client know it will be a bit of trial and error.

When I had a Brussel's coming to my shop for the first time, I contacted the person that does the Brussel Griffon breed articles in the AKC Gazette.

      Her reply was...Do the body like a Schnauzer...using a 5 or 7 blade.

      Shave the ears.

Do the top of the head like a cocker spaniel....shaving the backskull with a 5 or 7, and leaving the crown like a cocker. The beard is left with full cheeks. (from outside corner of eye to the ear canal....in other words, cheeks are NOT shaved like a schnauzer.)
You want a round head, so scissor and neaten and blend until you have accomplished that.

Show dogs are hand stripped...pets, of course, can be done with clippers. Length will depend on thickness of coat. You want a natural and neat appearance.

Good luck and have fun. These are fun, little dogs to work with.

syphol...eyebrows may give the wrong impression. They don't have eyebrows like a schnauzer or scottie...that would take away from the round look. The front of their face will look more like a shih tzu in a full scissored face. I like to use thinners in the space between the eyes to make a slight indent...thus, that may be the 'eyebrow' that you are referring to.

I do a 3 or 4 down the back like a schnauzer clip, then a 3 on the top of head leaving bangs a little fuller, round face.

I only groom 1 Brussels and the owner has me shave it in a lion cut. Sort of. There's no lion mane, but the head is left full and round, (ears are shaved)body shaved with a #10 and bottom half of the legs left long.

It's actually kind of cute. I love Brussels. They remind me of warm squishy water bottles.
