I'm thinking of getting a clipper vacuum system. I saw in a magazine about an adapter kit to attach a regular shop vacuum to my clippers as a less expensive option. Anybody have experience with this?

So long as you can put the shop vac in a box or something where the sound can be muffled a little, I can't imagine it could be that bad.
I have a clipper vac and when I had a problem with a small part, I was DYING without it. I had a reallllly greasy icky cocker and had to groom it without the vac, I nearly died, lol. I guess I got "too" used to it!

I don't know anything about the adapter kit, but I can tell you that I love, love, love my clipper vac...I don't know how I ever lived without it..It has help me speed up my grooms so that I am able to actually groom more a day... I have another groomer friend in town that has the adapter kit and she says she loves it too... Tammy~

I knew a guy who used a shop vac, with the attachment, it was loud but it worked the same. I don't see why they are so expensive. Seems to me they should start at around 250 at the most, 700 is just so much to pay for something that sucks hair. I don't see what makes it so pricey. Did you know you can get a central vac put in your whole house for about 1000. But one little vac cost 700-900. I wish they would come down some.

If my Clipper Vac is full of hair and jams up and I don't realize it while doing a dog I unplug the hose and plug it into my 5 gallon shop vac with a hose clamp on it. It sucks more hair up but works fine. It is just a little bit louder than my clippervac running. This has only happened a few times but at least I know I have a back up. I know they are expensive and the shopvac works just as well. The bad thing about sucking up more hair is when doing a drop coat dog with a comb it makes it a little more choppy looking.

I never thought the IVAC was all that pricey at $260. I remember when most any Laube Clipper was over $200. As for the IVAC, it is a completely new design of clipper and lets face it, anything new in design usually costs more. The company is going to recoup their designing, patents, and manufacturing costs as quickly as they can. It happens with everything, not just clippers. I love my IVAC and though it took me a while to get around to ordering it, I would not be without one ever again. So much lighter and no hose in my way. Plus if my clipper vac breaks down, I can simply switch it to the shop vac and keep going. I do still have my Andis and cv attachment should the IVAC break down to use while waiting on a new IVAC. I pretty much try to have a backup for every possible break down.

So would you all recommend this for a new groomer getting into the business?
How does it save you time exactly? Is it just b/c you don't have to clean up all of the hair after each groom? Or is it more powerful than traditional clippers?
My birthday is not too far away...I might need to ask for this one, the groomers helper and the.........and the.........and the.........

I have the Clipper Vac and love it! I also bought the attatchment for a Shop Vac, but haven't used it yet. My friend has the attachment and said it works the same as the Clipper Vac. I think it would be fine for a new groomer.
As far as speeding up the time, I think it's because you get a cleaner cut the first time, it lifts the fur as you clip. Definately less clean up too.

For a couple hundred more than an IVac you can have a Hanvey TaxiVac. The IVac is hard on my hands and I've heard too much about them having issues and being returned for repair to want one of my own. I have a back-up for everything so don't want to spend money needlessly on equipment that is always breaking down on me. As far as the adapter and all that goes with it to make a CV wanna-be? You're better off, IMO, getting the real dealYou can watch the used equipment ads here or go to ebay and see what you can find.
It is such a time saver because you don't have to continually go over and over and over the clip trying to get it even AND it saves clean-up time. The job is done in 1/2 the time---same with a bathing unit

I say go for the attachment. My boss has a modified shop vac, and it works great. I would imagine it is a little noisier than the IVAC, but it works well, and is considerably cheaper. Plus, a shop vac is a lot cheaper to replace if necessary, and I'd imagine the same goes for the parts.Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job. ~Franklin P. Jones

Thanks everybody for your imput, it allways sounds like anybody who has the IVAC loves them. The noise of the shop back worries me, but the adapter is supposed to have a veriable speed device that reduces the motor speed, which might make it quieter.
Luvkitties-I don't think it's about cleaning, as much as it's about a better and quicker groom. At least that is the info that is attracting me.
