  • What is a "hula skirt"?

I keep hearing references to this.. and get the idea that it's wrong.. but what exactly is it?

It's where someone has done the back pattern on say a Cocker or any other skirted breed but not blended the pattern lines and just leaves the skirt sticking out.

The terrible skirt that is left on a cocker, schnauzer, westie, etc.

              skirts

I was told and taught, that a Skirt was where you do the belly of the dog
from underneath and widen it so much that the full hair on the dog
is not as thick. It does in fact make a hula type skirt.
From the outside it looks like a normal skirt, its just thinner.
The legs can be left long or clipped shorter per the owners instructions.
Its, quicker to dry, and leaves less hair on the belly and lower sides to mat.

We call that type of trim a comfort cut. The belly is shaved, but the body skirt is left long. You can't tell unless the dog rolls over on his back and shows you his belly. It's not only cleaner, but in hot weather the dog can stretch out on a cool surface and be more comfortable.

A hula skirt looks like someone took an Exacto knife down the side of the dog and created a line between the long hair of the skirt and the shorter, clipped back and sides.

I've gotten a lot of dogs that have been given a hula skirt by their previous groomer, and I always ask if that's the type of skirt they want, of would they prefer a correct, blended skirt. I haven't had an owner yet who prefers the hula skirt over a blended skirt once they see what it looks like.
