Today I groomed a very neglected but absolutely sweet Golden Ret. They told me with all the preparations with moving to a new house they really havent had time to keep up with her. Now this is about as bad as I have seen a long time. This wasnt just "oh I missed my last appointment" it was like I missed any brushing for the past year! Anyway she was such a sweetheart. Stood still while brushing even with my 2 little girls standing outside the door talking and watching. She just wagged her tail. I lost my last golden 5 years ago at almost 14, so I do have a soft spot.
But when the owner came to get her I told him I loved her and that I would love to keep her.......to that he said "Oh we are getting rid of her" !!!! Yes they are getting rid of this sweetie. And I couldnt believe why. The house they bought has a yard that isnt finished and it will just be a muddy mess, and its really his daughters dog and she doesnt take care of it and sometimes he even has to give it WATER. God forbid. They dont deserve her. He said they had someone lined up to take her. Even though I have enough dogs I told him to let me know because I would definately take her.
After working for a humane society for so many years I really should be used to peoples blatent disregard for an animal, but to have it in my house, pressed up against my leg, not wanting to leave with her owner, it really breaks my heart. Sorry I had to vent!
Give all your pets, dogs and cats too a precious hug. I for one am happy that they have a loving home.

I'm so sorry for you. I know it is hard to see this beautiful girl go to someone else. Maybe they will have a change of heart and you'll get a phone call in the next couple of days.

If it's meant to be she will end up with you somehow, otherwise just pray that her new owners will give her the love she deserves

Doesn't that just break your heart!! I would call them in a day or two and let them know you are serious about giving her a home, just to give them a "nudge". It drives me nuts when I am told a neglected dog is neglected because it is "my kids" and they don't take care of it. My kids would not HAVE a pet if they didn't take care of it. HELLO, it is called parenting to make sure your kids fufill their responsibilities! OOOOH don't even get me started! lol Anyway I hope you have a new "addition" here in the next few days. Let us know!

People think you get desensitized after working in a Humane Society. Untrue huh. I was the Adoptions Manager at one for a long time. I thought when I quit and started grooming it would be easier, but some of these dogs and owners break your heart. How many pets do u have from working there? I have, and this is good, only 3.

Well its been a long time since I worked there, but while I was there for 2 years as a paid employee and 10 years as a volunteer, I think I had 8 cats and 4 dogs. Not an easy job. I dont think I could do it anymore.

Call them. Today!! You never know what has transpired in the past day. Let them know you are more than willing to keep her for them until the new home comes through and I'd bet she'll end up with you. This is the reason I had to stop volunteering for the HS and instead go to a Poodle rescue in my area. At least I don't have to hear the calls for "So-n-so to the ER" when I'm there. They keep all the furbabies for life!

I had the sweetest 3 yr old golden on Tues. She was rescued from a puppy mill. They were getting rid of her because she wasnt producing enough pups. She was a very dainty thing. Oh, and so well behaved. Her new owners have another golden and they take very good care of him. She was blessed with a second chance at life. If I ever came face to face with a puppy miller, I would probably lose it and cause bodily harm.
Its so sad that this kind of activity happens.
