  • Is she crazy?

There's another groomer who has a shop about 1 mile from me (I am in a busy city) who opened her shop about 5 months before I did last year. She has another job in the evenings so she closes at 3 pm every day. So if she gets a customer that needs to come in later than 3, she refers them to me. She also only has small cages and no ramp into her tub so she's unable to groom dogs over 40 lbs, so she refers them all to me. Then about a month ago she decided she didn't want to groom cockers anymore, so she refers them all to me. (I'm not a huge fan but I won't turn any away as long as they are behaved).

So just last week she calls me and asks me if I groom Malteses. Of course I said, they are generally very well-behaved and they are very popular in this area. Well turns out she is no longer grooming them because "they are very small and their skin is paper thin, and there's too much of a risk of hurting them". So now she refers them all to me! Looks like I can cut back on my advertising costs and just wait for all her former customers!!! THe funny part is that she is always complaining about how slow she is and how she can hardly cover her rent.

Sounds like there could be some hardly used equipment for sale soon and maybe even an employee to groom small dogs.Expanssion is good to.

Wow, good news for you I guess. You're right, maybe you should quit paying to advertise. I don't do large dogs either becuase I don't have a ramp. But I'm not picky when it comes to the size I can safely do. I don't see how someone can be that picky and still stay in business. I guess like Doug said, maybe there will be some used equipment for sale in your area soon.

....Or she just knows, and accepts, her limits. I don't like BCs. I'll groom one but it starts at twice or two and a half times my normal charge for a coat like that on a breed of similar size. I've only groomed 2 in the time I've been in business and I LIKE it that way

Jeez, definitely don't think that I'd be able to stay in business to long doing that! I mean we don't take some breeds because of their rep (rotties, chows, pits, etc) and we get enough grief sometimes by people...I can't imagine what our clients would say if we told them we don't take maltese!

LOL, Doug, I was thinking the exact same thing. I've never noticed maltese skin being thinner than other dogs ???

I will take a rottie, or a pit over a cocker or any other little snapper .

Now, where is it that you live? I'm thinking maybe I'll move there and be a neighbor on her other side and she can split the referrals between the both of us ROFL

Love to have a neighbor like that. I have a groomer just up the street from me, haven't met them or anything maybe I should go introduce myself, tell them if they get any small to med size dogs that they don't want to do to send them my way! LOL

i myself have gotten so busy that i have weeded out almost all my PITA's..i refer them to my competition (she does a good job). i told her ahead of time, she was really glad to have them...works out well for almost everyone. when they beg to come back, i charge them more.
