I am apprenticing at a salon once a week while working my non grooming job until I get started. I want to take the IPG Exam in Sept. 30 this year and do a Poodle style. Does anyone have any advice on how to prep for the written and practical exam? How difficult was it?

Make sure to order the IPG guidelines and study them, study The Complete dog book(oficial AKC book on breeds) can't remeber the exact title but that and practice practice practice. you need to be able to groom your poodle in 2 hours so make sure you are confidant in doing so.
I did the exams and did not find them to dificult but I prepared for them(could have prepared much better also) but jut make sure to study theire guidlines and no body elses and just relaxe while taking the test... hope that help
