• Grooming Library

I'm starting school soon and wanted to start a grooming library a little at a time. What book(s) would you all recommend would be absolutely essential to have (besides Notes, AKC). I am getting Notes soon, but wanted to know what others books I should definitely have...parasites, anatomy etc. Your suggestion please.

    Beyond Scents and Suds

I would suggest Barb Bird's set of books, the Beyond Scents and Suds, is invaluable when learning what is and is NOT in our shampoo's,conditioners and how these ingredients work!

So much of what we see and hear is actually Marketing HYPE, not the how and why. Most sales people only repeat the marketing hype, but have no clue to what those ingredients actually do. for instance...When was the last time a salesman told you products with Silicon is bad for hair...? Hello? What do you think is in most of our human hair products, and what makes all those de-mat products work so well?

She also has a great book on Communication Skills for the grooming shop. Speaking to clients, and gives situations for you to ponder while reading. Invaluable works for the beginner. She also has a great book on shear! AND I thought I had a pretty good handle on that, but I like the way she put everything into contex , from the actual selection of a shear, what's it's made of, how to select and techniques that work for or against the shear.

These books can be purchased only through bbirdbiz.com (she'll be at APF) Barb was also a Cardinal Crystal Award Nominee 2006... The lady rocks!

You had me all excited, Pam, because I thought Cardinal had finally announced the 2006 nominees. But, after visiting their website, I realized you must have meant 2005, because the 2006 nominees haven't been posted yet. Darn!!!

I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for BBird to be nominated for the Journalist Award again this year and finally get to take home that crystal obelisk. I haven't read her other books, but I bought Beyond Suds and Scent, and it's an excellent resource.

Giselle, another book you might want to add to your collection is Poodle Clipping and Grooming by Shirlee Kalstone.

Where do you get the show dog magazines?

Like dogs in review and terrier times?

Also where is the best place to get the Ackerman's skin and coat book mentioned?

                  Cesar's Way - Cesar Milan

A must read for anyone who has a dog or works with them on a daily basis, like all of us! This book will teach you sooooo much about dealing with dogs. It has some great tips on how to work with nervouse or aggressive dogs too! And the best part is Cesar really knows what hes talking about and his methods really work!

PS- Watch his show too. Its a good idea to see how he does it and then read about it. Friday- 8PM - National Geographic Channel!!!!

I know this is an older post, I hope it isn't too late to ask a question. I am a big fan of Ceasar and his dog psychology. I have been wondering if anyone uses his methods and has had a negative reaction from dog owners. For example, he recommends not making eye contact with the dog upon meeting and not reaching out to the dog until the dog greets you (as an act of calm submission on the part of the dog). Having the dog then trust yuo as the pack leader should help make things go more smoothly, right? However, I would think that some unknowing owners could misread this as you being unfriendly to their pampered pooch. Just wondering...

                      great question

I would love to know. I doubt that would be a common practice for groomers. Even though its most important how we establish our relationship with the dog for grooming ease and harmony, we have to make Mrs Smith feel that FiFi will be treated with lots of kindness. What way can we show that? We have to fuss over them to a point if we want good customer relations right? Please someone tell me if I am wrong on this?

I'm mobile and most often I just love on the dogs when I first meet them, which of course the owners like. But when I know ahead of time, from the phone interview, that there will be a behavioral issue, I tell the client ahead of time what I will be doing (like Cesar) and they understand and appreciate what I am doing. Never any problems.
