  • Blade sharpening, how often?

How often do you get your blades sharpened? How do you know that your blade is in need of sharpening? Do certain breeds/coats dull blades quicker?

my blades seem to dull fast when grooming kitties, and i think it depends on the brand of blades too,i just bought my first buttercut blade 5 months ago,and i never knew i could be in love with a blade,i prefer wahl competion blades too,but i get mine done every 3 months, but i have 2 sets of each just in case one takes a **** before i get them sharpened, dirty pets dull blades fast too

I don't have a set schedule for sharpening blades. When they need it, they get sharpened. Keeping them oiled and clean helps, and cutting clean hair only keeps them going for a long time. I am using blades that haven't been sharpened since May, and they cut great. I keep 2 of everything, and 3 of the blades I use most-10, 30, and 40.
Old groomers never die, they just go at a slower clip.

      Groom on!!!

I usually have mine done about every 3 months. Some will last longer. It depend on the brand of blade, how well you clean and oil them, and whether you use them on dirty coats. Dirt probably dulls blades faster than anything.

You'll know your blade needs to be sharpened when it drags through the coat without cutting, and cleaning/oiling it doesn't help. If all your blades suddenly stop cutting, it's not the blades, it's your clipper. You need to change the blade drive lever periodically.

It seemed like I was ALWAYS getting my blades sharpened, every couple of months. That was when I was roughing in my grooms, that's how I was taught.
I bath first now and then use my blades on nice clean hair it has made a BIG difference. My blades last so much longer, months. I keep them cleaned and oiled.
I thank this board and the members on it for all the info I have gotten, and the money I have saved.

I think that how often the clipper blades require sharpening can depend a lot on how busy the groomer is and how well they clean and care for the blades. Also, I find that I use certain blades more frequently than others. I keep several sets and I have mine sharpened when I feel that they are not working as smoothly as normal. Usually anywhere from Once to several times a year.
